Demon's voice was so strong in the writing and the narration that I really felt it was him telling me his story.

The one thing I didn't like was the very ending. Why must every
postive relationship turn into romance in fiction? Had she remained his sister figure and nothing else had changed except the romance at the end removed, I honestly think it would be a stronger story. That's what made this not a 5* for me.
The book is also incredibly long and I think could have been edited down without losing anything important.

There were so many quotes I highlighted. For instance:

I drew pictures in my notebook of Stoner as a super villain getting crushed in various ways. At some point the shows, comic books, drawings and my dreams all got mashed up so it was like there wasn't any me anymore. Just a quiet boy that looked like me with a beast inside.

I didn't spell out to Angus what she couldn't understand. That without football I'd be nobody again. That the loser Demon was still right there under the surface, and if I lost the shine I was nothing.

Some part of me was relieved. Thinking now I wouldn't have to worry every minute about her dying. I thought I'd be better off without the fear. I was so wrong. Even with nothing else left good between us, that dread made me a person still attached to another person. Nobody needed me anywhere now.

A guy was coming in 2 days time to haul everything to the dump, not even a yard sale. To their mind, our life was entirely trash.

This book was both extremely difficult to read and so compulsive. I’d have to put it down every 20 pages because I couldn’t deal with the gut-wrenching sadness and then have to pick it up 5 minutes later because I loved these characters and needed to know that they would be ok, that they could be ok.

A perfectly dark, sad and realistic take on the opioid crisis. You’ll fall in love and have your heart ripped out over and over again. Curse Ms. Kingsolver (not really, she’s a literary genius)
