It’d been a while since I cared to read a book about high fae but that was before Kellen Graves

An interesting start to a series. There are moments that feel a little rushed, but overall it’s rewarding seeing certain events pay off.

DNF at page 149. I wanted to like this book so badly because I’ve read some gay fantasy/ romance fantasy books I’ve adored and this cover and concept seemed fantastic however the writing completely weighed it down.
Gets two stars because it’s really hard to write a book especially one that is so intent on being inclusive and that is so admirable. Also the fabulous cover art should get acknowledged.
The potential that the world building offered was trapped in a loosing battle against bad writing.
The sentences had me wondering if my brain had fully stopped functioning or if that was actually how it was written. Some sentences felt backwards, others so vague I couldn’t other stand them and entire paragraphs where written as paragraphs meanwhile there seemed to be no connection between words. I couldn’t figure anything out and I read dense books and fanfic alike * cries in reader*
This is how it felt to read it
“ saffron saw a tree that was red. Dewdrop came over they were angry. Saffron didn’t know why it was angry. Comes there bird. The room was windowless. Giggles cylan was so cruel as they came to the lake”
The characters felt someone had played a game of telephone and by the time the descriptions got to the author anything of substance had been removed.
Thé incredible plot devices, lore world building and more that could have created fantastic moments and scenes full of emotion or even something that made sense never happened.
I don’t think there was any plot. I would fancy there is a romance based on the beautiful cover art but even by the most incredible stretches of the fantasy romance tropes I couldn’t find one in the pages I read - a true slow burn I suppose.
Truly needed a massive write and a gifted story editor to help this author focus and explore what was working and kill all the darlings that hold this back from actually being readable.
Bottom line rep is beautiful and I love the intention and if you could make heads or tails of the book enough to enjoy it I’m so happy for you and I hope the love of this book means we can expect more diversity in our fairy romance books going forward cus I loved how naturally all that fits within this genre and those elements of the world building were the strongest.

I love the ideas and mythology behind fae. However, I don't often read books with them. Usually I find that the soulmates troupe is used to hell as an excuse for a relationship that had no initial chemistry to jump straight to a usually horny phase.
But Thank God, this book seems to take the best parts of the concept of fae and introduces some main characters with depth and a relationship I actually care to read about.
Graves is amazing at casual world building. Introducing concepts integrated into the world. I especially think that Saffron's annotated book of myths was especially clever as it gave insight to the world, introduced an interest and hobby of Saffron, gave us insight into how Cylvan thinks, and helps establish Saffron's initial attraction to Cylvan.
A couple more points:
-I LOVE the pronunciation guide in the front. I always forget to look for one then I usually find out too late.

I literally don't even know what happened, it was a good read but like what. I felt like I was missing stuff, but the build up kept me going. The writing was good, not cringing but the shock, though it was slightly transparent.
