Parts of this book had the potential to be 4 star material, but overall, it kept getting dragged down to 3 stars for the following reasons:
  • High melodrama. Mare Barrow is going to be the main character with the full on ego and self-centeredness that she is due. There are many paragraphs, pages and soliloquies that I wish an editor had been brutal with.
  • No fun. Everyone is serious at all times and the book lacks banter. Even when the cast of characters expands. The only fun character is Nan and she’s rarely in the story.
  • Lack of pacing. A good story will have a calm before the storm, or a super quiet scene and a jump scare, or a funny scene breaking up tense scenes. This book is a long slog through tense action and then long description before going into battle and then more of the same over and over.

Holy crap I finally finished this book. I absolutely loved Red Queen, it was original, fast paced, had great characters and an amazing storyline. The follow up book has me completely disappointed. It read nothing like Red Queen read, it was slow paced and frankly very boring. Instead of putting the reader into each exciting moment, they were all written as the main character describing them after they occurred. Another thing that baffled me was the random moments where the characters would speak as thought they were in a Shakespearean tragedy. If it wasn't the second book to a series I was really excited for I probably would have given up on it. But I do intend to finish the full series as the books are released in the hope that it will get better again.

Kinda felt like half of this book was rushed... Like I have no idea what actually happened towards the end because it wasn't detailed and it was like she was just on fast forward for the entire second half. Kind of like the story was being told in blurb form.
I would have given this 3 stars but it got 4 instead because it was a good continuation from Red Queen and overall a good novel, just not one of my favourites.

I didn't care for this book as much as I did the first one. this may just be because I am not a fan of books in the middle of a series. I found there to be a very irritating character I'm not exactly sure why but I just didn't care for her and her choices. there was so much potential in so many scenes where she could have developed as a person and as a character in my opinion. such as in the beginning when she starts to feel herself going to this other way and during Shades death. not only that but I found it very predictable. A death, yes, a pregnancy, yes, but I didn't exactly see that ending. I wish that instead of killing off shade she would kill off maybe Kilorn or Bree or Tramy or another one of her brothers that wasn't really there to help move the story forward. I am going to be honest the thing at the end of the story with Maven really just a little going. Mara was just very irritating and I didn't care for her decisions and she could have just been a better character. the writing was not the best. there was a lot of room for good writing and good character development, but I didn't see it. at this point in the series I care for both Cal and Maven equally but that is just me and my preferences. I feel for Maven because of the way Mare showed off Elara's head and just how irritating he is. I think that he is right to do that to Mare. He was really hurt. and I think Mare is becoming a heartless person. I will keep reading this series and Victoria ' s books, this one just wasn't my favorite.
