My rating is based on my personal experience of the book, not its merit. It is thoroughly well-researched and Keefe does a decent job of trying to remain unbiased, though his opinions on certain things become clear in the language he chooses. However, if you're expecting more on the murder of Jean McConville, you will be disappointed. The way he wraps up the book helps mitigate some of the sense that she's used as a prop to tell the story of the IRA, but it's still frustrating. Perhaps this is meant to mirror the frustration of the McConville children and their search for justice. It is by and large a purely infuriating book - not because of some lack in Keefe's telling, but because the whole story is the same one we hear about all the "conquerors" and the voices that are silenced in the process.
