Oh Roth.....
I'm such a mess with that ending! Wow! Jennifer Armentrout has done it again! I'm so so in love with her books and this one was obviously no exception. Theres just something about her writing that is just so addicting. I couldn't stop reading this and getting enough of it. It was hard to put down and yes I did lose quite a lot of sleep over this. Don't let the cover or the title of this book fool you. While romance is an intense, fun, and big part of the story...it's really about so so much more. It's about good vs evil and a girl trying to figure out who she is as she takes a step back and goes against everything she was taught to believe in.
It was so different than anything I've ever read in the sense that it include GARGOYLES and DEMONS and they're really really hot gargoyles and demons...
First we have Zayne who is the gargoyle/warden. In my opinion he was okay. He's a nice guy I guess. Honestly I didn't like him all that much through like 90% percent of this book. He was frustrating and his choices towards Layla bothered me.

BUT. BUT. He did get better towards the end of this book. He just bothered me how didn't seem to accept Layla for who she was and he just seemed judgmental but that might have been because of his father who was an absolute asshole Really most of the wardens annoyed me.
I did find myself enjoying the FRIENDSHIP that him and Layla had and I'm interested to see where it goes it better not go ANYWHERE
Then we have Roth who is a new boyfriend of mine as well as a FUNNY AND REALLY SEXY DEMON. Daemon Black, watch out! This guy is snarky, intense, seductive, insanely gorgeous and does all the right things.. And can you tell which side I'm on?

He was so SWEET towards her and PROTECTIVE in just the right way and so strong and he believed in her and encouraged her to accept herself.
My sense went into overload, firing in every direction. The kiss-it was everything I could've imagined a kiss to be and then some. Sublime. Explosive. My heart fluttered wildly, from yearning so deep, darts of fear shot through my veins.
"See," he murmured in a thick voice and he let go, his fingers trailing over my cheeks. "Your life isn't about all you can't do. It's about what you can do."
But then...
"Your tongue is pierced," I said dumbly.
A wicked gleam filled his gaze. "That's not the only thing pierced."
Ahhhh
Not to mention there was so much sexual tension. My God. It was practically oozing right off the page.
"When he kissed me again, it was that deep scorching kind of kiss that pushed me to the edge of the cliff. I was ready to jump off headfirst, to finally feel everything I'd always believed to be denied to me.
My fingers dug into the smooth skin of his biceps as his free hand trailed down my stomach, fingers circling my belly buttons and then lower, under the band of my jeans."

But yeah there was ALOT OF SEXUAL TENSION IN THIS BOOK. Here's another one of my favorites:
"It's okay," he whispered against the corner of my lip. "This is about you. Yeah, this is totally about you." He sounded surprised by his own words and when he spoke again, his voice was hoarse as he presses his forehead against mine. "You undo me. You have no idea how you undo me."

" At some point, Roth had gotten hold of my cell and replaced Zaynes name with Stony and listed his own number under Sexy Beast. What a tool."
I was dying of laughter at some of the things he'd say. Oh man he's so great.
But anyway this story was also a lot about acceptance. Layla is half warden and half demon but she was raised by wardens so she just always thought demons were all bad. But then Roth comes along and opens her eyes to the demon side of her and eventually she learns to accept who she is.
"People with the purest souls are capable of the greatest evils."
It really challenges the question, what really is good and evil? And where's the line between it?
Honestly this was a fantastic story all around and my heart was broken from the ending. The action in this book left me breathless and the ending was painful in that heart wrenching sorta way. It did have a kind of Supernatural feel to it with all the demons and stuff so I definitely feel that fans of that show will devour this book.
So yes I'm off to go plow my way through Stone Cold Touch because WE CANT END IT THERE. Just, NO. And the plot twists throughout the story left me mind blown. Jennifer Armentrout has sucked me into another one of her exciting worlds and I can't wait to see where it goes.....
I'm also very nervous because I am VERY attached so a specific person who is NOT on the cover of the next book....

The writing of this book significantly improved as it progressed. This was kind of not a good book but I enjoyed it overall? You just have to overlook the 2000s YA tropes/pitfalls and part of the writing. But I am already reading the second one so do with this review what you will.
This was decent story wise. I enjoyed Roths quips and watching them work together. Layla was naive so that was a little annoying.
It was fun to figure out how the magic and hierarchy worked in this book.
I do think Zayne got off quite easy. He was a very bland character and didn’t do much for Layla yet she had no issues with him.

3,5 étoiles J’avais lu la nouvelle qui est sortie un peu avant et j’avais bien aimé. J’étais donc curieuse et confiante quant à ce premier tome qui continue à nous présenter l’univers des Gardiens.
Layla l’héroïne est à moitié Gargouille et à moitié démone. Recueillie par le père de Zayne depuis qu’elle est bébé, elle a été élevée par les Gardiens et dans leurs traditions.
Layla est secrètement très amoureuse de son frère "d’adoption", mais elle sait qu’entre eux il ne pourra jamais rien se passer…
Dans ce début Layla va apprendre des secrets et vivre des situations qui vont briser toutes ses croyances, celles que lui a inculquées sa famille d'accueil.
Dans l’ensemble, le roman est très teenager avec des thématiques qui parleront aux adolescentes ou bien aux jeunes adultes : le premier amour, la recherche identitaire, etc.
Layla est aussi gonflante qu’attachante, c’est elle qui porte le récit parce que les autres personnages, je les ai trouvé plutôt insipides ou clichés.
Roth, le démon qui va lui faire ouvrir les yeux sur sa condition et sur tout un tas d'autres choses, se présente comme un amoureux potentiel. Il est grand beau, fort, brun et mystérieux. Mais il y a également le fameux Zayne, grand beau, blond et... pas vraiment mystérieux (^^).
Franchement, les deux garçons ne m’ont pour le moment pas fait grande impression. Ce qui me dérange, c’est que j’ai le sentiment que tout tourne autour d’une relation possible ou pas entre les deux et ça me dérange.
Je dirais d’ailleurs que du coup, l’univers ou bien même l’intrigue se focalise plus sur ça que sur le reste. A ce propos, concernant l’intrigue pour moi elle est assez simpliste et déjà vue un million de fois. Je m’attendais à un style différent avec une mise en avant des Gargouilles et de leur hustoire, enfin quelque chose de plus fouillée et d'inédit…
Si ça se laisse lire avec plaisir, après tout, il y a quand même le style de Jennifer L. Armentrout que j’adore, je suis restée sur ma faim et j’espère que la suite sera plus intéressante.

Another perfect novel by Jennifer, & another exciting world to get lost in. I had put off reading this book & starting this series, & now that I’ve read this, I honestly have no idea why. I’ve found that anything she writes, I’m going to love. Jennifer knows just how to create a world, characters & storyline that keeps me hooked & gladly falling in love with. She knows how to get me invested in not only the characters themselves, but what happens to them. Specifically the main characters, but also the other minor stars of the books.
I absolutely love Layla as our leading lady. She is everything you would expect from a teenage girl who struggles to understand herself. I love how she grows throughout this book to being more accepting of her true self. She’s still going to have struggles, but I think she’s grown enough to be able to handle them better now. But of course like all other teenage girls problems, the issue of which guy to choose comes into play. There’s Zayne, her best friend since they were young & Roth, the mysterious bad boy demon, who she clearly has a connection with. As much as I love Zayne & think he’s a fantastic character, I am definitely Team Roth. Perhaps there just wasn’t as much relationship building with Zayne since they were already close, but there’s just more chemistry between Layla & Roth. I love that even given the fact that he’s a demon, it’s clear that Roth would go against everything he’s known for Layla. This is about another couple from whom we met in the novella "Bitter Sweet Love". While I didn't get the same gitty feeling fom the first couple, this is still a decent YA Paranormal read and had a few twists that I didn't see coming. Of course Saskia did a amazing job. #LibraryLoveChallenge
This book was chosen as the first book for Snacks + Stories, the teen book club at the library. After spending a weekend reading it, I must say that I am confused on how to rate this book. If I am judging the book for what it is (a simple paranormal romance book for teens), then it's fine. The book's biggest error lies in the setting. There is very little world building, which makes the setting feel thin. There were many points throughout the book where I was trying to imagine the events and all I could do was bring up the faces of the characters against the white background. There are other paranormal romance novels (albeit not for teens) that create a tangible and wonderful world--namely, Nalini Singh's Guild Hunters series or Psy-Changeling series. My other observation is that this book is steamy (not that I mind). But it is written for teens, so the constant references to sex was a little off-putting, but not crude in any way.
