McDermid is the queen of Scottish Noir. Many of her novels are set in northern England, but for the Karen Pirie series she has returned to her native Scotland. Pirie is a DCI in the Historic Cases division of Police Scotland, assigned to Edinburgh. This novel revolves around the discovery of a body buried in a peat bog with two valuable Indian motorcycles. There is a sub-plot of domestic violence in an upscale neighborhood in Edinburgh, that results in one death and one grave wounding. Pirie's new boss is a woman, but as happens sometimes, this is a woman boss who is worse than any male boss she's ever had. Pirie eventually discovers the reason this woman is out to get her and relentless in her attacks on Pirie.

I rarely encounter a book I can't put down Fortunately, I now have the more time to indulge in reading and was able to read this in a few days. Highly recommended!

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this.

Great story

The hunt for buried treasure from the Second World War leads to the discovery of a body. DCI Karen Pirie and the Historical Cases Unit is called in to investigate. She’s also involved in a current murder case after something she overheard in a coffee shop Both investigations brings down the wrath of Karen’s superior ACC Anna Markie - she’s put a DS in Karen’s team without consultation. Great story from start to finish.

I received this digital review copy from the publisher through Edelweiss.
I really enjoy the Karen Pirie series and encourage anyone who hasn't read them to catch up in time to read this book in December.
I will give a more detailed recommendation when the book is published.

DCI Karen Pirie heads up the historical case unit in Scotland. Karen is still suffering from the loss of her significant other and seems to be having a hard time trusting anyone around her.

Karen is out chasing leads on a series of historical rapes when she is asked to divert to Wester Ross where a body has been discovered, buried with some Long sought treasure. The body is well preserved by the peat and has more modern shoes leading the forensic specialist to call Karen.

I haven't read any of the other books in this series so it works well as a stand alone. McDermid's narration is flowing and really moves the story along. She describes the landscapes so well you can almost smell the peat and feel the wind on your face. This is a really good police procedural that has many components to keep you reading.

I really enjoyed this novel and I'm putting these on my radar to keep up with any new ones!

3,5✨

I listened to this via an audiobook.

This is the first book I have read from Val McDermid. This is the 5th book in the Karen Pirie series but can still be read as a stand alone.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed in this book as I have heard amazing g things about this author. I found the book to be quite slow moving and not really thrilling. It was an ok read and I would read more from Val, but I wouldn't exactly call this a page turner. Just ok. 3/5 stars.
