I don't think Rowling/Galbraith is as good at detective fiction as she is at young adult fantasy. Nonetheless, I've generally enjoyed this series. But the will-they-won't-they subplot is just as old in this series as it is in any other series....
mysterious slow-paced

I loved everything about this book, it is just as strong as the rest of the series -- smart, complex, detailed and charismatic. I read this while recovering from Covid, in 3 days, and there is only one author who will keep me reading through so many pages and cry in the end because I want more! I literally could not put it down, now I'm finished my life can go on. I'm so grateful this exists!

Well I loved it. It was like twelve hundred pages and I read it in under a week. And I am NOT a fast reader. And gah, it made me really think the internet is a TERRIBLE place. I mean I’m forty so it’s not like I’m big on social media or trying to get dates or anything, but man alive, people really will say ANYTHING out there!!! Glad I never figured out Twitter. I liked the mystery, I love Robin, I could have used a little more Pat and Midge and Shanker, but no complaints. Except people really are complete garbage. #engelbrechtreads2022 #engelbrechtreads

Ok, so I liked that Gallbraith did something a little different with the online gaming/fandom world. The inclusion of the messages and other forms of online communication was also unique. And I still think the ending was good. However, this book is too longgggggggg. Just like the previous book there is just so much that’s repetitive and I kept skipping through much of Strike and Robin’s relationship stuff because we’ve seen it before…

Okay. I've got a lot of feelings about this book, so buckle up friends. Here. We. Go.

I have been obsessed with this series since I found it. Yes, I realize how controversial JK Rowling is. Yes, I have a ton of mixed feelings about all of her books. Yes, she is a TERF and I wish she would just... just stop. But, I'm 6 books in and I've got to know how this series ends.

Now, back to the book.

The plot: okay. So JKR/RG is just venting her spleen about all the Twitter abuse she has received over the last few years. Was it exhausting to read? Yes. Is online abuse terrible and something that drives teenagers and adults to suicide? Yes. But for fucks sake, just BE ELSA JKR/GB.

Robin/Strike: I cannot, I repeat CANNOT, go through another book where these people don't just talk to each other. It has been five years. FIVE. YEARS. Just say how you feel and deal with it. Good God.

Strikes leg: every. Single. Book. Now has strike falling down because of his leg. Look, my father has a prosthetic leg. It is literally cut at the knee, almost like strikes. He has not fallen as many times as strike. The man literally played football in a prosthetic leg, it snapped while he was playing, and he had to hop off the field. Does JKR/GB know any people who have prosthetics? It doesn't feel like it.

The book overall: this was a good book. The intrigue, the mystery, the twists and turns, I loved it. But I cannot give it more than 3 stars because we are 6 books deep and the same thing happens every time. Strike glances longingly at Robin, Robin misinterprets something strike said, she runs off and almost gets stabbed again, and someone ends up in the hospital. Can we just have some character development? Please??
