Magpie Murders

Anthony Horowitz

3.88 AVERAGE

slow-paced

It’s been ages since I’ve read a mystery, and Horowitz’ novel is a very satisfying one. In the novel’s first half, we read the latest mystery story by famed author Alan Conway and later it shifts to his editor Susan Ryland’s story that also a mystery when she discovers the author is dead and the last chapter of his story is missing. The way the novel is presented is very unique and it all definitely brings many feels of Agatha Christie’s mystery writing. B+ (83%/Very Good)

Whoa. This book was a crazy ride. The whole thing was completely unexpected and new and I’m pretty excited to have experienced it

Fun book, but just a bit too long. Could have had 100 pages trimmed. The dual plots reminded me of David Mitchell. I rarely read cozy mysteries, but I did appreciate how the author subverted many of the tropes of the genre.

Really enjoyed this one! Read it together with Michael as our audio book for the month. Very clever literary devices used by Horowitz. Loved his Alex Rider series as a teenager and loved his mystery as an adult! Will have to continue on to book #2.

Magpie Murders was outside my normal milieu of cozy mysteries, but I really enjoyed it. In some ways it's a double-feature- there's a murder mystery novel set inside... well, another fictional murder mystery, really. I listened to this as an audiobook, and liked the use of two different narrators for the two different parts. There's also quite a bit of discussion of who-done-it structure and writing, and at least passing mention of classic authors or detectives that mystery addicts will appreciate. While it won't appeal to fans who want nothing to do with modern times, if you read mysteries for the puzzle, this is an excellent work.

This was a fun book but also really long the mystery was interesting but not as good as others I’ve read. The stylistic surprises were fun.

I enjoyed this story within a story.
