Well... for all those things, I give 3 stars.

This was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. A story told by a zombie? What did he have to say other than "hrrmrrr" and "Brrrraaaiiinnsss..."??

Apparently, a lot.

What I appreciated about this book was how easy it was to just let R take the reins and tell the story. The difficulty of how he meets his girlfriend is awkward but dealt with gracefully, and his explanations of zombie life were really fun. I had to stop watching Walking Dead because by the end of season two, still no one was granting any real "humanity" to the walkers, but here, the zombies are allowed to have personalities even if their skin is sliding off. Great read!

I'm not sure I get what the theme of the novel is.

5+++ Stars

I will keep this short and sweet.

Not only is this by far the best book i have read all year, it is without a doubt one of the best books i have ever read. Period.

To look at the plot summery it sounds like it could never work: a love story between a young woman and a zombie. But, Marion takes an impossible idea and brings it to life in such a way that you don't question the premise. It reads like poetry, and unfolds like a movie before your eyes. You care about these people. Deeply. And I for one will never forget them.

It's been years and years since I wanted to read this book. I saw the movie and loved it to pieces, and was eager to read the book...but never did.

However, here I am, finally reading it!

For one, I flew through this. The writing style was super easy to grasp and read very quickly. It was engaging, with mostly internal monologue with the occasional burst of action description and generally not much dialogue, especially in the beginning.

The story unfolded quickly but believably, and I could instantly tell where the movie strayed from the book. The movie focused more on the romance and solely on R's transformation while the book covered a much broader expanse of the created apocalypse world.

I wouldn't call myself an expert in zombie literature or media, but I have watched a lot of zombie shows and movies, and I have a fondness for the zombies that toe the line between humanity and monster. This book hit all the marks without giving up substance, consequences and some really terrifying moments too. It's 5 stars are extremely deserved.

Loved it. Kind weird and hard to follow at times. Overall, a great book. Has Adult themes but nothing too inappropriate.

I'll admit I hadn't heard of this book until hearing about the movie. Well, I decided to read the book first and luckily I wasn't disappointed in either one.

Starting out, it became apparent rather quickly that the story was a bit darker than I had assumed.

“What wonderful thing didn't start out scary?” - R

R makes a good point, as is the norm for this novel. You follow his inner monologue throughout the story since he's unable to utter more than a moan or groan. The zombie apocalypse has come to fruition but R has no idea why, so the reader also has no idea why. Normally this would bother me but it fits the narrative.

Normally I don't indulge in fictional zombies (sorry R). Zombies have become extremely over rated. Thank you Walking Dead. I remember about 4-5 years back I was reading The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead by Max Brooks (which I loved btw, very practical and informative) at work and people were blatantly laughing at me. Now people laugh and gawk at me when they learn I don't watch The Walking Dead. Luckily Warm Bodies was quite a bit different than I anticipated.

First off, the writing was thick with philosophy. R may have been a zombie but he was quite intelligent and curious. His internal musings didn't leave me yearning for more explanation because he was very intuitive.

“In my mind I am eloquent; I can climb intricate scaffolds of words to reach the highest cathedral ceilings and paint my thoughts. But when I open my mouth, everything collapses.” - R

The best part of Warm Bodies was that nothing sparkled. There was no fluff. He ate people and it was violent. The leading man was a zombie, the enemy was both the military and skeleton cult, the leading lady a retired teen prostitute, and the world had crumbled in on it's self. Gritty and real.

Julie was no-nonsense and acted as the human counterpart to R. She was strong, confident and saw R in a way that no one else did. The romance between the two was unexpected but a little corny. Especially the way it ended.

To sum it up I really liked the book. Honestly I'm pretty late on this review so I apologize if my writing is scattered. Warm Bodies get's 4 stars and I've already recommended it to a few people. I also watched the movie which I'll review as well.

I read this directly after New Hunger, which isn't recommended (see my review for New Hunger). This was quite different from the movie, but in a good way. There were parts of each that I enjoyed more than the other, but not too extreme where it ruined the experience.

What I think is fantastic is that Isaac Marion did such a great job on his first book. I was really paying attention to the way he wrote R's thoughts and actions as the book moved forward. His inner monologue improved; became more lively. I can't wait for the next book and possibly next movie.
