Agatha Christie never disappoints, but The ABC Murders takes a break from her usual model and features a nationwide murder mystery. That calls for an ensemble that arrives too late, and doesn't ulilize it much either. However, the characters are still interesting and Hercule Poirot offers enough circus in their absence. Nails with its twist, as usual.
Not much to say about this one except that Agatha Christie had me totally fooled. Poirot is such an enjoyable character and it's always immensely entertaining to watch him work.
One slight nitpick is that the actual villain turned about to be less creepy than the person whom I thought it was, and his motivations were a little mundane compared to the scale of the crimes.
A fun Poirot read, here's hoping I get around to some more one of these days.

A good one, but not her best! Has a late in the series feel, probably because it is. An interesting time capsule in its references to domestic labor, train travel, and WWI.
I am becoming quite the Christie fan! This is the third of hers I have read, and the first Hercule Poirot mystery. Time and time again I am astonished by her stories. I have yet to correctly guess the guilty party! I guess I must learn some French if I am to continue reading Hercule Poirot. Magnifique!

Pretty good. I thought I had it all figured out, but I guess it was too obvious. Things are not always what they seem.....mmmmm

It's incredibly hard to rate this novel fairly because I watch and read a lot of murder mysteries. I can think of a couple of those that use a version of this plot and do it better, which isn't meant as an insult to Christie. The first pass at an idea is rarely the best even if it's done well and this was done wonderfully well. I enjoyed reading it. I just think I would have been more impressed and enthralled if the idea was new to me as it's one of those concepts that's easy to spot once you know what to look for. It's hard to be subtle when it comes to serial killers.
Even if you're like me and have seen this plot before, the novel is still worth reading. It's an early entry in the tales of detectives going after serial killers. So early the words "serial killer" don't even show up because the term didn't exist yet! In spite of that, it clearly inspired writers for decades to come and is hailed as one of Christie's best. I'd give it a shot if you're a fan of hers or just want to look at an influential work in the genre. If you're just looking for a casual fun read and you're well versed in detective fiction, maybe go with a different book.
