The ABC Murders

Agatha Christie

3.9 AVERAGE

It's incredibly hard to rate this novel fairly because I watch and read a lot of murder mysteries. I can think of a couple of those that use a version of this plot and do it better, which isn't meant as an insult to Christie. The first pass at an idea is rarely the best even if it's done well and this was done wonderfully well. I enjoyed reading it. I just think I would have been more impressed and enthralled if the idea was new to me as it's one of those concepts that's easy to spot once you know what to look for. It's hard to be subtle when it comes to serial killers.

Even if you're like me and have seen this plot before, the novel is still worth reading. It's an early entry in the tales of detectives going after serial killers. So early the words "serial killer" don't even show up because the term didn't exist yet! In spite of that, it clearly inspired writers for decades to come and is hailed as one of Christie's best. I'd give it a shot if you're a fan of hers or just want to look at an influential work in the genre. If you're just looking for a casual fun read and you're well versed in detective fiction, maybe go with a different book.

thought i knew the ending!!!!!! but alas!!!! i am no match for ms agatha!!!!!!!! my jaw was on the floor!!!!!!!

3.5
Enjoyable and, as always, an ingenious ending, but this one just did not have the grip on me that the other Agatha Christies have had so far. It also felt like it was pretty much impossible to come up with the conclusion yourself, which kind of takes the fun away.
Still, if you are searching for your next Agatha Christie or detective story, feel free to give it a go!

The Queen of Mystery had me again. This is my fourth Poirot book I've read and I am in love all over again with Christie's brilliance in both literary and crime.

Again, my mind was played with strings of clues and suspects. One murder leads to another suspect and another but in the end, none of them were the true suspect and the true suspect is always someone we never thought was a suspect through out the book.

I literally wonder how what and how she imagined her crime stories while she was writing it because this is a really brilliant story with complex plot and it challenges readers' minds.

Really enjoyed it

3.5/5

Better than I was expecting. This book is a unique one in the Poirot series because he is chasing a serial killer who seemingly kills indiscriminately. But it remains a Poirot book and Christie still manages to make him shine.
This would be a good entry for the fourth Branagh movie because it is so different. Recommended for fans and non-fans.
