DIVA ALERT 🚨🚨🚨 cupid should have made troilus a twink and spared criseyde
That’s more in the spirit of “classic romance” in the reading challenge than the Shakespeare version, though not without a fly or two in the ointment to puncture the vainglorious proclamations of lovers and warriors.
Not much of a Medieval Lit person, but what can I say, one of my favorite profs was teaching the class. This was a fun read, nonetheless.
Good lorde! Reading a text this long in Middle English is a real trial, but since it was for a Middle English class, I got through it. I would say it was worth it, even for bragging rights, but it is actually brilliant and very lovely.
read this for class. it was actually pretty good. ending was a little anticlimactic but still poignant
I read The Canterbury Tales + some of Chaucer's other short poetry/dream visions before this which maybe gave me a skewed idea of what I was in for. I really do love Chaucer, but some parts of this poem were a struggle, even for me. Book II seriously had me wanting to tape Pandarus' mouth shut, lol. One of the things I love about Chaucer is his sharp wit and humour, but this text is really lacking in that department. I suppose it makes sense considering Troilus and Criseyde is a tragedy, but it's still a shame.
Very fascinated by Chaucer's references to literary authority in this one, as well as his depiction of women/Criseyde. I'd recommend reading the prologue of "The Legend of Good Women" immediately afterwards, as it continues with the discussion of how women are represented in medieval literature. Geoffrey is a real one #feminist

Pandarus: Original creepy uncle. Criseyde: Actually pretty defensible considering the circusmstances. Troilus: Does nothing but cry. Chaucer: Makes the Trojan War more boring than Bingo night at the local nursing home.
Update 9/13/18: Still convinced it might be the most tedious poem of all time.

Chaucer is a genius. This is the version to get, as far as I can tell. Pretty much translates anything you need and gives you the original plus some pretty decent criticism.
