A deeply disturbing but unfortunately realistic book. Very interesting to read, but some moments were so horrific that they made me nauseous. Beware of triggers, as this book has many. I loved reading this book, but at the same time it made me sick. I felt anxious and sad about living in a reality where such sad things happen, and it made me cry. This book made me realise that thrillers on these subjects are not for me, even though they have a high literary quality. The author really took care to illustrate the places and people of certain nationalities accurately, and that impressed me positively.

I would never tell someone to read this book. It's dark and sad and horrible. You think it's a weird, slightly funny story about a sad girl and then from nowhere it's about her horrific background and then it gets hopeful and you think it'll all be okay and then it ends by basically telling you that there is no hope and there is no way to escape the cycle of abuse. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.

In the beginning I thought this book was as 4/5 star read, but I was disappointed by the ending. The first half of the book was really good, but later on the story dragged. Also as  mentioned above I have a problem with the ending, because for me it was hastily written. I understand what the author tried to achieve with this ending and I think I could have been great if the author had written it with more insight in the character.
But to end this review with a positive note, I really liked the character development of Sally Diamond. It was understandable and for me it brought some sense of hope, which was beautiful (but sadly destroyed in the ending).

One of those books that I could not put down, but would not enjoy reading again. It held up its mystery all the way through and gave a terribly realistic portrayal of how it is to barely survive through years of isolation and trauma that no amount of therapy can undo. I won't nitpick on the logistics or the occupational plot holes one of the main characters had, as they weren't the focus of this book. I would say it has some similarities with Nita Prose's The Maid but with a much bleaker ending.
