Hmm. I quite enjoyed the experience of reading this, particularly witnessing Sally grow and build her community. And I absolutely HATED the ending. I am not someone who craves or demands a happy ending for my characters, but I also don't want one that is needlessly cruel or doesn't even actually make sense with the character development that has happened before that.

This book took me on a dark ride. It started off strong with Sally burning her dead dad and the townspeople trying to figure out if she is crazy or not. When she finds out who her biological parents are, she decides to make changes in her life. I loved the relationships she made with the two children in the book. Especially since she missed out on being a kid herself. Watching her stand up to the nasty people in the town was pretty great too.
The backstory of Sally’s upbringing is incredibly sad, but I ate it up! Reading about her dad and brother is traumatizing. Imagining growing up thinking you have a horrific disease that can kill you if someone touches you. How messed up would you be?
What the heck happened with the ending though? I was really frustrated by it, but I still really liked this book.

This was a fascinating story and I enjoy the way the audiobook was produced, using different voice actors for different elements of the story.
I found Sally's journey interesting and enjoyed her evolution. I was really rooting for her to find her place in the world and whatever happiness she could.
I will say I found I was a little dissatisfied with the ending. Leaving Sally in such a dark, lonely place after all her progress and Steven getting away with everything while turning into his father even more. I would have enjoyed a little levity somewhere.
