I really, really loved this book and was all set to give it 5 stars, but I was disappointed with the ending. No spoilers—just left me a bit meh. A darker twist on Eleanor Oliphant, with an equally lovable female lead. Would be a good book club read, as there is much to discuss, including neurodiversity, the legacy of abuse, and the healing power of friendship.

Anyone who loved ‘Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’ by Gail Honeyman will bloody froth this book.

The protagonist is very similar to Eleanor (likely on the Autism spectrum) and the matter-of-fact narration is brilliant.

This story is filled with twists and turns, some of which are predictable, while some are not. It’s dark, it’s upsetting, it’s difficult and brilliant.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Plus! Wellington, New Zealand got a mention! Which is always a thrill.

Loved the book up until 75% of the way through. I feel that the ending fell flat and there was no meaningful character growth.

Gripping, unable to put down.
