“Have you talked to North?" he said.
"Yes," she said. "I asked him to get us cable."
"I wish you weren't talking to him."
"I'd talk to Satan to get cable," Andie said.”

Well, that was different! A genuine ghost story from first to last. Some parts reminded me of a light-hearted Turn of the Screw. Andie's ex-husband needs someone to temporarily take care of two children who have fallen under his care. He calls on Andie who despite their painful divorce, he trusts and respects. Andie needs the money, so she agrees. When she travels to the isolated old mansion and meets the children, she knows she will have her hands full. Do they need love and stability, or exorcism?

Some romance fans may be disappointed in the number of pages devoted to love and hanky-panky but I was fine with it. The right people got together at the end and happy endings were had by all except the villains of course. Jennifer Crusie's signature snarky repartee and humor were front and center. The hero and heroine were very likable although North's constant repetition of "I don't believe in ghosts" got very irritating. The two kids were very interesting characters and I enjoyed their character development. The secondary characters kept things rolling along as well. In fact, Gabe, a character from Fast Women, I believe, makes a cameo. I would have snatched up a sequel to this in a skinny minute.

Andie Miller has found a new man. She is going to get re-married. First she needs to have one last talk with her ex-husband, North Archer. North asks Andie to do him one last favor and then he will be out of her life forever. A very distinct cousin has left North guardian of two young children. The children’s parents and grand mother are all decreased. North is too busy and knows nothing about children. If Andie will go down and look after the children for a bit, just until North can find a permanent arrangement, he will pay her ten thousand dollars a month. Andie does not want to do anything for her ex but she sure could use the money. Andie agrees. There is one more catch…the house is said to be haunted. Three other nannies have already quit.

When Andie arrives at the house, she receives a cold welcome form the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers. Carter and Alice are odd children but nothing that Andie can’t handle.

North’s brother, Sullivan wants to check out the house and see if it is really haunted. He is taking Kelly O’Keefe from Channel Twelve along. North ends up going to the house to check up on things, especially Andie. Is the house really haunted? Also, is a second chance in the air for Andie and North?

Maybe This Time is the first book in a long while that author, Jennifer Cruise hasn’t co-written. I like Ms. Cruise’s books. They are guaranteed to make me laugh. Maybe This Time is more on the paranormal side then the contemporary side. It took me a while to warm up to Andie. I found her to be a bit of a wallflower and I wanted her to have more assertiveness, which she did but it was slow to appear. I never fully found myself falling for North. He was rude and I didn’t care for him. So, it was hard for me to believe that Andie and North were in love. The children kept things interesting. Overall, I did like this book. Maybe This Time is sure to have you losing track of time reading this book.

I always enjoy Jennifer Cruise's books because they read like romcoms and her dialogue is unparalleled. As someone who has either lived in Columbus or Cbus-adjacent most of her life, I also really enjoy the references to my city.

Fast paced, great dialogue, laugh out loud funny, with a bit of horror and suspense. It was like Netflix's Haunting of Bly Manor as a romantic comedy. Loved it and would definitely reread.

Great read

Great premise for a book about the paranormal, not the usual at all. Lots of humor and warmth. Didn’t want it to end.

I believe this is the first Jennifer Crusie's book I've ever read and I was pleasantly surprised. It was fun, quirky and of course romantic. Ghosts as part of the plot in a romance novel isn't a novelty. In fact Jane Eyre came to mind. Obviously Ms. Cruise based some of her story in this classic. Regardless, I enjoyed it and shall read more of Cruise's books.

Creepy ghosts and romance - what more could you ask for? A very fun read by a new to me author. North and Andie are both strong characters. Lots of tension in the book but it's also very funny. Thumbs up!
