Unfortunately for reasons that aren’t completely known, a few days before his death, Gogol burned the second part of this story, and it ends mid sentence with many parts missing from the later chapters. However the translation was very readable and story is an insight to Russian life with interesting characters with their own peculiarities.

Hard to star since it’s not complete which is kind of frustrating towards the end because I really want to know what’s going on! But it is satisfying enough and has such interesting characters that are funny and built out enough and enjoyable for the whole first volume just a lot of journeying around and getting a glimpse into what gogol loves hates about his home. Love the part where he just suddenly deviates and writes about how beautiful Russia is for a section.

Really loved book one - that alone merits a five star rating for this book. The first book is hilarious, engaging, and exhilarating. It only makes the fact that the second book remains unfinished even more frustrating. I did not know that it was unfinished before going in, and I really think the second book is not even worth the read. I wish Gogol had the opportunity to finish this, as it would certainly be one of the true classics among all books. Still, even the first book is genius and deserves a read. Just know it remains unfinished!
