The first thing I have to say about this is that I really enjoyed the reading experience. I'd heard of the story but only the musicals (?) so I didn't know what to expect. The genre classifications (SG says its horror and mystery) kinda had me thinking it would be much darker but than it was. I really liked the layout of the story; how its an investigative journalist sharing to us what happened. The beginning was a bit difficult for me, as there were a lot of characters and backstories and at that point I didn't know who would be the one to look out for and who not so I struggled there. But once I got into the swing of it I just breezed through it

I'm not sure how I feel about the Persian character just becoming that important in the third act, or the new managers being dropped as Christine is kidnapped, so the execution is at some points interesting. I really enjoyed the new managers refusing to believe the existent of a ghost lol

In the end I came to really like that the ghost wasn't a ghost, but just a guy that was too ashamed to come out in plain sight, and instead lived through all the backstage side effects that make a theatre performance, as a "trap door lover". To me it feels like an homage to theatre/opera/stage performance that there are so many things that go into a performance backstage, that you can make magic backstage ... you can even make a ghost !

Really enjoyed. The characters were layered and flawed in an uncomfortable way, but with motives clear enough to make you understand them. Raoul and Christine are endearing and the opera ghost is both charming but repulsive-absolutely no sorta burns here.
I love the internal battle Christine has with her love for Raoul but her guilt towards the Opera Ghost.
I wish people judged this on its own merit and not compare it to the musical so much and applying their characterisations to the book characters.
This is not a love story, it's a great gothic romp.
