Very fast paced - lots happening one after the other, lots of names that I couldn’t really keep track of everyone. The story itself I enjoyed, but I did find it challenging to keep track of at times.
i was quite intrigued while reading this as a fan of the 2004 movie. i think it overall held up and i enjoyed the additions that the book gives versus the movie. however i wish christine and roaul were more compelling in the book. it wasn’t strong enough of a romance (tragic or not) for me and i then found myself wishing that the Opera Ghost took more of a main role than he did

MY FRIEND, — Meet me at the Opera on the night after tomorrow for the masked ball. At twelve o’clock, be in the small salon beyond the fireplace of the crush-room. Stand near the door leading to the Rotunda. Do not mention this assignation to anyone. Wear a white domino and hide your face carefully. You must not be recognized, my life depends upon it.

There are few novels in which I can pin point exactly where the novel lost me. In this novel that exact point was “In my country he’s known as the Trap Door Lover”
This, in my opinion, is clearly a case of a theatrical adaptation resurrecting and continuing the life of a novel that otherwise would have collected dust on bookshelves in France. All of the characters are unlikable and barely 2 dimensional. The plot is absurd. The dialogue, I understand there can be difficulties with translation, but holy mackerel the dialogue is unbelievably terrible.
