The book is a story of the politicking during a papal conclave.

Diversity in the book is skewed. There are characters from many countries, but they are all men.

The phrase “For Christ our Lord…” drove me crazy, it was repeated multiple times and every time I thought “through, not for” but maybe that was just me. I thought the subplot of the intersex cardinal was I think unnecessary, especially as it had Lomeli covering up a scandal when for the rest of the book he was exposing scandals. I liked the rest and really loved the name chosen by the new pope in the circumstances within the book.

I never paid attention in my brief time at Sunday School, but I’ve always weirdly been a fan of the PCU (Pope Cinematic Universe): Angels & Demons, The Two Popes, ect.

Conclave is the latest entry in the PCU. I wanted to read this before the movie came out.

It’s very entertaining and Harris is an excellent writer. I’ve already picked up some of his other books. I’m not surprised this got turned into a movie.

When readers talk about this novel they usually mention the killer twist at the end. I can confirm it is a great twist, but I was so prepared that there would be a twist that I figured it out before the end. It reminded me of when you go see an M Knight Shyamalan movie and spend a lot of the time trying to figure out the twist.

Took a while to establish all of the characters and there were a lot of them but the pay off was excellent. An incredibly compelling narrative full of twists and turns
