I started this book a year and a half ago struggling immensely to finish it because it wasn’t consistently particularly interesting (this could be a personal thing as I don’t care much about the rich and famous but do love to read about architecture, art and history). I made it my news years resolution to finish all the books I’ve started these past few years and am happy I did finish it. Why? Because it brought me knowledge about other authors and places of significance that I’m excited to check out.

This was a very readable collection of stories from the Vanderbilt family by one of its most famous members--Anderson Cooper. Instead of a trashy tell-all, Cooper gently humanizes certain family members to show how they overcame or succumbed to the trappings of wealth and privilege. The chapters about Cooper's mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, are especially strong.

I was SO pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this! I would HIGHLY recommend the audio book read by Anderson Cooper.

DNF: I listened to the audiobook and got a little under halfway through. Anderson Cooper is an amazing writer and narrator, and this is a great read/listen for those who are interested in the Gilded Age and high society. Hearing stories from an insider’s account gave it a new, unique perspective. Personally, I’m not interested in the topic and couldn’t finish for that reason. I was too bored.
