I wish i hadn't waited to read this. It is intense and fabulous. Can't wait for the rest of the series...which, of course, I have queued up and ready.

this was so good, it had literally everything. fantasy, drama, romance, mystery, and i was invested the entire time. although,bc of martins writing, some chapters were very boring i still enjoyed reading what ever character what was present. they are mostly all morally grey and it makes it so much more exciting to read

While I did very much enjoy the story, I had quite a few major problems with this book. Firstly, there is a 300 page section in the middle of the book that is very, very dull. It would have been okay if there were smaller sections that were bland, but this was a large part of the book.
Another problem I experienced was that the children do not feel like children. Bran's voice does not read like a 9/10 year old's, and I kept forgetting that Arya and Sansa are not even teenagers yet. Since a large part of the book is told in the perspective of one of these characters, this is a bad problem to have.
Other than this, I quite enjoyed A Game of Thrones. I had been spoiled for the ending, so I knew what was going to happen there, but there were still plenty of other twists and deaths I wasn't expecting. I also really liked Tyrion's perspective and humor, and Jon's was pretty good as well (though he seemed older than he is supposed to be also).
Overall, I enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to continuing the series.

Eh, it was alright. Parts dragged quite a bit. I made the mistake of reading it on my nook - I think it would have been a better read as an actual book (no real basis for that). I'll probably read the next one since all of the background info was given in this book.

The problem is, I started reading this book after seasons 1-3 of the TV show were already out on HBO, and once I saw the show, I couldn't go back to the book. I managed to make it 33 pages in before I gave up completely.

I may have lost my taste for High Fantasy. There are only so many times I can read the word "destrier" without getting fussy.

Glad to have reread this after also watching the HBO series. I'm not a fangirl of dragons, zombies, and knights, but I am of great storycraft. This series is satisfying on so many levels. It stands up to repeated readings. Of course, I caught more plot foreshadowing this time around, but also a deeper sense of the themes. Unforgettable characters! You care when they die.
