I have been a big fan of Harry and Megan. A great read (listen) into more insight about the royal family and the chance for Harry to tell his story and perspective of leaving the royal family. Got chills while listening to him talk about his mother and the impact of her death and his relationships with his family.

Wealthy powerful entitled Prince thinks he has it tough and wants to touch our hearts while not even being aware of himself enough to realize how out of touch he is. During a war, a soldier (him) gets shot at? He gets protected, pulled out. He feels unsafe at home? He calls Elton John and Tyler Perry and stays at their mansions flying all around the world. Sad? Jet off to a few foreign nations. Oh but poor baby had to do his own laundry, how relatable.
All of this topped off with a cherry at the end defending the monarchy and what they’ve done for England and the world.

I know next to nothing about the royal family. I remember watching Diana & Charles’ wedding on tv, present on all three channels available to me. I was disappointed my regular cartoons weren’t on. This ended my relationship with that family until I decided to watch the Netflix special last week. What a corker THAT was! I quickly got this book and sweet Jesus, it’s a great read. These people are living in a fucking CULT- Thee are so many similarities to Scientology, somehow ??? Anyway. Harry is a brilliant writer, or his ghostwriter is- I don’t care who. It’s great writing. Powerful stuff. Probably not interesting if you’ve been following everything as it’s been happening since the dawn of the monarchy, but for me, wow.

As a person who has actually read the book, I felt it was important to review to drown out some of the negative non-reader reviews. This is a compelling and honest memoir. I very much enjoyed getting to see a glimpse into what it is like to be one of the most famous people on the planet, through no fault other than being born royal.

His life has taken so many turns and this book goes between being a war story, a grief journey, and a family drama. And, for those wondering why he would write this, he answers that in the book. One, he needs the money to provide security for his family, who are under constant threat. And two, Prince Harry finally gets to tell his story his way. Whether that is to contrast the lies in the media or for his family to finally understand him.

As this is likely the only memoir from anyone in that family, this exclusive peek behind the curtain is refreshing. Though, maybe there was a bit much about the family jewels. Lol.

There are things I really liked about this. I liked that Prince Harry opened up about his mental health challenges, about his relationship with Meghan Markle and about his own insecurities around being part of the royal family. Yet, I was hoping for a bit more substance to this. Most of it felt very surface level and there was almost no real dirt shed. A lot of it was stuff we all have heard before. And so much of this focused on his military service which felt so dry and boring. Also, this is probably the first time that I could tell this was ghostwritten. It just did not feel like Harry's voice or perspective at all. Not a terrible book. Definitely contains some stuff to satisfy your average royal watcher. But if you're looking for anything deeper than that, you may walk away disappointed.

There are always two (or more) sides to every story, but this one paints a picture of an appalling institution that I am unsure why the British people would want to continue to support. I really don’t know much about the Royal family beyond watching the Crown, which we can say is probably just “based” on the truth, but the little I have learned is a little jarring. Harry has a bone to pick with the media, and that can get tedious in this book, and some details shared seem unnecessary, but all in all this memoir left me feeling incredulous as to why people want to maintain an institution well past its prime- and one that destroys families at that.

It's clear the monarchy needs to be abolished. Other than the Queen it's obvious that none of the remaining members give a fuck about anyone other than themselves and the public appearances the press give them. Harry's inside details prove this all the more and confirm he's on his own and that might just be the best for him and his family.
