Probably one of the best fantasy books I’ve read this year. The characters were all really well written and fully fleshed out. I would’ve liked to have understood more of how and why Cas survived the plague, but the story was good despite not knowing. I loved that the world building was subtle and not over the top or info dumped on you like some authors have unfortunately done. The pacing of the story was great too and the twists kept me guessing right up until the moments the truth was revealed! I’d definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a fast paced but well written standalone fantasy.

I enjoyed this book. It’s a linear plot and I read it quickly.  Not an overly complex plot but sometimes that’s just what you what. It has what I like in a YA fantasy, what I would consider a romp, good action with a couple twists and slow burn romance.

It’s somewhat gory so if that turns you off keep that in mind.

This book was phenomenal. This will definitely be on my 2022 top 5 list. I felt like I stepped back into my old Runescape game. Much like the author, I was always fascinated with stories of the plague from the medieval age. Lucier captures the world and the people and what life was like for them. The main character suffered from the plague and can see the spirits of those who passed and adding that into the story, grabs the reader by the heart and can be incredibly emotional at times. The story of love and loss and what family would do for each other in the time of plague and war mixed with humor was done so incredibly well. I'd be interested to see if anyone else saw Henry Cavil's Geralt in Cassiopeus and Jaskier in Bittor, because that duo was just iconic. Her mix of LGBTQ+ and romance in the narrative was done so well and made it so realistic within the story. I will absolutely be purchasing other novels written by Makiia.
