I don't think this book is for me. I didn't enjoy the writing style or the main character. All the men seemed to get upset at every little thing and there was way too much telling instead of showing. The plot also felt a bit cliché.

Stand alone. No spice. Not as grim as expected from the cover, but it was entertaining and cute

This book isn’t bad, but not a favorite of mine. It seemed that a lot of unnecessary details were added just for the sake of it. Particularly descriptive sentences that added nothing. There is no explanation of how or why Cas can see spirits and others can’t. I am assuming it is because he survived the plague but that is not stated. Also, the conflict appeared to have wrapped up too quickly. The whole book was leading up to finding this assassin and they were dealt with in the span of three pages. But an easy read for me and the concept is interesting so I cannot complain.

This book was so good! The cover is misleading because it makes it look like a war book and it is not. This book was sweet, sad, and even adventurous. The plot was a little predictable but I didn’t mind in the slightest. It’s a quick but enjoyable standalone and I would definitely recommend picking it up.

I loved this characters so much, absolutely beautifully written.
I wish this was a series, I feel like there’s more to be told — story and characters wise — Even though I feel like the ending was a bit rushed I still enjoyed it very much.

This was definitely a decent YA book. I instantly felt connected to Cas and I loved him throughout the whole tale. I also liked Lena.

I found it hard to keep track of all the other characters, especially with so many unfamiliar names and titles being tossed about, amid all the new country/city names. If one fantasy novel could have benefitted from having a map, even a simple one, this would have been it. I couldn't keep track of which countries housed which cities as they were named off and I couldn't really picture the actual settings of basically anything in this story except a few places (the hospital, the Pastor castle) and that really dragged me out of the story. The court intrigue was fun, I guessed much of it but that's part of the enjoyment, but there were still some parts that were confusing to me.

I really liked this book! The setting, lovable characters, and fast-paced plot made it really enjoyable. I always gripe about the use of modern language in historical settings, but this was YA so I was still able to enjoy it. Lucier’s writing style is really engaging and her characters were very well-written. Looking forward to reading Dragonfruit when it comes out later this year!
