This very recent publication from Kristin Neff focuses on the “mama bear” type of self protection and compassion we can give ourselves, to stand up for what’s needed. Much of how this was presented didn’t jive with me. I think mama bear energy can sometimes displace empathy and some of her stories highlighted that for me.

Admittedly, the Yang side of self-compassion is not my default, and it is Neff’s. She presents the need for this attribute and balance coming from that perspective rather than an empathetic view of the Yin side, in my opinion. So her advice and suggestions felt unrelatable or difficult for me to apply.

Amazing book! I learned so much, and very practical reframes and tools to help myself be more compassionate toward myself and others.

I listed to this audiobook and probably should have read it and been more serious about the exercises. An important self- help concept that I was not familiar with and need to practice more.
