The first few pages in I was expecting it go turn out like Diamonds and Toads. (It does not, but that one sister really is the toad one!) I thought it was nice to read a fairy tale that felt so familiar and yet was about another culture, and about how beautiful these girls are. And it was still about inner beauty more than outer beauty. I think it's a great book.

Great book to use in Cinderella / fairy tale unit. Has some elements similar to Mother Holly.

Per jacket notes in back, this story "was inspired by a story collected by G. M. Theal and published in 1895. The tale was collected from people living near the Zimbabwe ruins, a site that archaeologists now consider to have been a magnificent trade city built and occupied by indigenous Africans."

I remember reading this one as a young girl, and reading it again brought the magic right back. The illustrations in this one are awesome too. It's just so good!

This also teaches that being a good person is worth it. It is worth far more than beauty. I enjoyed this story very much.

Alternate title: Morality for Beautiful Girls (which I think is a actually a McCall-Smith title)
