I would have liked Nyasha not to be so docile but overall it was a good story

This is an African take on the classic story Cinderella. I greatly liked how all the characters are likeable and can be found sympathetic to the reader. With most Cinderella stories, certain characters are so unlikeable due to their meanness that it can make the story seem rather one-sided. I honestly was not aware of this fact until a librarian friend told me to check out this book as an example. The art in this book is amazing!! I enjoyed the King's adventures to see who could win his heart as well since in other Cinderella versions he (he is also known as a prince in other versions) is not very active in finding his bride. This book is a nice choice to show that wonderful stories can cross many countries and live on for many years.

Absolutely one of the most breathtaking books I've ever read!  John Steptoe's stunning illustrations grace his beautiful re-telling of a Xhosan morality folktale.  Centering upon two very different sisters: Nyasha who is selfish and cruel; and Manyara who tends to her garden and has respect for all living things--both must undergo a series of trials.  Kindness and perseverance triumphs in the end.

the african folklore of Cinderella

❤️💚🖤✊🏾✨

A nice book to introduce kids to Africans who don't live in abject poverty, as the media would like us to believe.

A retelling of an African folktale in the Cinderella theme. Two sisters live in a village where they are well know for their beauty. Manyara has outward beauty, but she is not kind. Meanwhile Nyasha’s beauty shines through her kindness. When a king announces that he will soon take a wife both sisters face challenges to determine who shall become queen. The illustrations are very nice, with high detail and realism. It’s always fun to read fairytale story’s from around the world, even though I’m not overly interested of the fairytales common in western culture. Overall, this one is a great lesson on the value of kindness and a nice read aloud for a variety of ages.

Very good. Fairly classic princess fairy tale, but lovely that a snake is a good character, and the illustrations are beautiful.

A twist on a Cinderella tale, set in Africa with two sisters hoping to marry the king. The illustrations are gorgeous and very lifelike.
