An African tale, yes, but familiar in plot. Girl 1 is good and kind, girl 2 is not...and the second one stumbles due to pride.
Predictable folk tales are what I am looking for to teach my students the plots and predictable nature so that they, too, may emulate them in their own writing.

Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters is an African fairy tale. Mufaro has two daughters: Nyasha and Manyara. Nyasha is nice and beautiful, but Manyara is selfish and mean. Nyasha takes care of a garden and is friends with a snake she names Nyoka. The king decides to have a party to find his wife. Manyara sneaks out of the village in the middle of the night to make sure she reaches the kind first, and on the way she ignores a hungry little boy and an old woman. Nyasha, on the other hand, gives the boy food and listens to the old woman's directions. At the end of the story it is discovered that the snake is also the king, the little boy, and the old woman. Since Nyasha helped the little boy and the old woman the king chooses her as the most beautiful girl in the kingdom and chooses her as his wife.

A magnificent retelling of an old African tale that centers on two beautiful sisters, one who’s vain and the other who’s selfless, and how one of them might become the bride of a great village king. It’s the amazing lifelike illustrations that tell the story perfectly. A (100%/Outstanding)
A traditional African tale of two sisters, one of whom is kind hearted and the other is jealous. The King of the land decides to search for a new wife, thus all the eligible girls of the land must visit the city for the chance to become his bride. There are several tests along the journey to evaluate the most suitable for the King.
This is an excellent story to illustrate the importance of being kind and gentle toward others, as it is kindness that is far better than anything else.

In this traditional literature book, Mufaro has two daughters that are very different when it comes to personality. As the king searches for a new queen the daughters true colors really show. The illustrations in this book are masterful examples of a different world.
I've been in love w/ this book since Phylicia Rashad read it on Reading Rainbow a long, long time ago.
*2.3*
While I really enjoyed it I wouldn't go out of my way to read it again. I wished the story was longer and I enjoyed the overall theme. The illustrations were gorgeous and probably one of my favorite things about the book.
