Lots of eye rolling during this heavy handed novel. I kept listening anyway, wondering why, so that's something, I guess.

I couldn’t put this book down. I enjoyed the mystery and the twists as well as all the tarot. I’m looking forward to seeing what this author writes in the future.

I thought this was historical fantasy/dark academia.
I was wrong.
Everyone was insufferable.

Somehow, I went into this novel imagining it had a stronger supernatural element, when in reality, it's a tightly wound exploration of dark academia tropes ... I saw the focus more on professional relationships, ambition, the beauty of rare objects and archival treasures, the striving and posturing of academia, and the way morality intersects with the private rules we create for ourselves. Once I shifted my mindset to a Secret History-esque story, I really enjoyed this slow burn.
