As a brown girl, I’m a little disappointed this book didn’t resonate the way it did with so many others. Maybe because I’ve unpacked much of this already, I didn’t find the revelations inspiring. Also, it just wasn’t what I expected since it was more of a memoir than a love letter to me.

This book opens by declaring who it is for. By its end I am convinced it is for all of us. In this internet time we are encouraged to be active and engaged in our media and to prove that we are tuned in we interrupt a narrator and their story with our input, in real time, as we “listen”. This needs to be a book. An experience to be listened to with no way to interrupt the author in the telling of their story. In this way, by this way, to hear and feel the weight of their story told by their ability in the craft of telling their story. I borrowed this but feel like this is a beautiful example of a book I should have in my own collection so I can reread it to be reminded of all the things. To the author: thank you for writing this down so honestly and inviting us to hear it. Thank you

If I could give it more stars I would! As Latina immigrant, this book feels like home. I feel so seen and I never realized others may feel similarly. A MUST read for women and frankly men.
