I enjoy the stories of the Alex Cross Mysteries. The only thing they do that sort of irks me is that the clues and thought processes of solving the crimes are always hidden from the reader. Much of the actual detective work is done off the pages and then we are shown the result of the story. I made guesses about the outcome and was correct in the end, but I had little to no evidence behind my inferences.

I'm not giving up on this series because I 90% enjoy it, but this book was not a recommend. The appeal of the Cross books aren't just Cross' moral compass and savvy thinking mixed with tough guy tactics, but the villains are usually complex, nuanced and deviously evil. The villain here is just a monster. There was no complexity to him. You didn't get to relish his incredulity at being caught.

I got sidetracked. I need to come back and finish.

It seemed the only point to this book was to try to shock the reader.

Number 14 and still going strong. This book is set primarily in Africa and while I found myself asking "Alex, remind me why you're still in Africa? Get your ass home!" It was still great.
I love the fact Patterson still has the ability to shock me with the end of his novels.

One of the best Patterson books I have ever read! What a roller coaster ride.
