I was interested in the historical context of this book, but unfortunately I found the characters a bit flat & their motivations unclear, particularly towards the end of the book.

This book gives an insight into the despair and survival during the British and Japanese occupation in Malaya. Besides feeling like raw, hard facts throwing at my face, some parts are uncomfortable to read as expected in a historical setting. I felt like I’m reading a fiction in a non-fictional setting. Like everything is believable. Hence the uncomfortableness and uneasiness. Although the scenes are cruel, most of the characters are difficult to relate in depth with some I feel unnecessary. Probably leave it to your own imagination and exploration to deep dive each character. Nonetheless, I did enjoy the familiar local references.

Definitely check trigger warnings before reading. Writing style was easy to read - I just wish there was a bit more character development.

Even though there aren’t any direct SA scenes, it’s really intense in the beginning since it involves minors.

It took me a while to process this book after finishing it and I cannot stop thinking about it. I was constantly intrigued by the different viewpoints shared throughout the book that show how the same war impacted everyone in the family in equally horrible ways. It also gave a voice to a part of history I never knew much about. The Storm We Made is gut wrenching and raw, and there are so many twists and connections within the book that kept me wanting more. If you read and loved The Nightingale then this book is for you.

The book portraits people who are in difficult situations trying to break free. The authors has a beautiful writing style but very heavy and traumatic topics are being discussed in this book. Please see the trigger warnings if you are a sensitive reader before picking up this book
