A friend recommended this series. A fun urban fantasy layered with mystery... and there are seven more books in the series! Let's see how book two goes.

The magic system here is very vague and inconsistent. Basically deus ex machin. Defi ite plot holes and very shallow characterisation. If you want something quick and light that you don't have to look too hard at, this fits the nil.

Had this as an Audible. Have given up. Not for me.

Initially premise reminded me of Diana Wynne Jones' Archer's Goon, which I still have a soft spot for as an adult. Night Raven, 4 families with different paranormal controlling powers and lots of history between them, plus an investigation, cracking!

Sadly it just did not grab me.

Narrator sounds like she's reading for Jackanory and some of the character voices sound totally dopey, Uncle Charlie for example and Aunt I've forgotten her name.

Lydia comes across as a twit and I just can't care about her or her missing 99th cousin.

Good but...

I'm not sure. It felt like something was missing. Something was unresolved when Lydia reached the end of her case. A lack of detail perhaps. Other than that the book was interesting. The characters are intriguing along with the concept of the Family. Lydia's mysterious set of talents is enough to make me want to pick up book two in order to find out more. 4/5 for that unresolved feeling though.
