2 1/2 Stars - I thought that the premise for this series was really interesting using Greek Mythology. I also liked the personal struggle each warrior has to go through with their demon. This book is also set in Budapest which I thought was awesome, cause I’ve never read a book set there.
Ashlyn’s character is sweet and caring with others. She stands up for Maddox and tries to protect him even before she realizes she loves him. Maddox I had issues with. He has the demon of Violence in him but this book made him tame. He’s possessive and protective with Ashlyn but he’s always able to control Violence around her. The book has the potential to be a dark romance but it isn’t. Maddox and his tortured soul find Ashlyn to be something precious. They talk and cuddle. He takes care of her and cleans up a room to make things special for her. It just seems so out of character from what Maddox was displayed as. Their romance was too sweet for what I was expecting. You are also introduced to like twenty characters in this book and it gets really tedious. I know it’s the first in a series and it needs to be built up but at times all the new people are just overwhelming. Are all those warriors really necessary?
The dialogue in this book leaves a lot to be desired. What there is of it, isn’t very memorable. The writing is always explaining things when I would have liked to see things expressed in the characters dialogue. It would have helped the characterization. The story kept me interested to see what happens to the characters but this is book was like information overload. This book does have one of the best conclusions. Ashlyn’s sacrifice for Maddox was a really great end and beginning for their lives together.
I really wish I would have liked this more. The Darkest night was a decent story with a great concept. It would have been better with less people, better characterization and a darker plot to match the demons. I’d be interested to read something else by Showalter.

This book has been staring at me for awhile in Goodreads. It has been awhile (2015 I think?) since I read this for the first time and somehow the site hadn't saved my rating there. It just kept staring at me and reminding me that I had no memory if I liked or disliked this book, so I decided to use the gift card that I got from one of my sisters to buy it and reread it. Another reason I wanted to reread this one because demons! Also Ruby @ Ruby’s Books suggests this series every time I ask for demon recs.
“You are mine, woman, and I am yours. Until you, my life was desolate. I existed, but I didn't truly live. Now I live, even in my death.”
There's something about tortured heroes that aren't trying to pretend that they don't have feelings that I just really enjoy. I'm just so sick of those heroes (mostly in contemporary) that just wants to have sex before moving on. Maddox has a literal demon inside him but still he manages to treat his heroine better than any of those guys. Maddox and all the other warriors that released demons from dimOuniak had been given a demon and Maddox's is Violence.
I don't know which warrior I feel worse for. Maddox for having to die every single night or Torin who can't touch anyone without giving them some kind of disease.
“Once I learned, I went online and ordered every romance novel I could find. They're fairy tales for grown-ups.”
Ashlyn had a shitty childhood and she's still suffering from the voices but then she meets Maddox and suddenly there's quietness, so instead of running away from him she doesn't want to let go of him. She was only five years old when her parents send her to the institute. There was only one person who treated her like she was a human being from what I gathered so despite of them studying her ability even when it hurt she felt thankful for them.
After all the young adult books I've been reading it was relief to read something with sexual content and I love romance books with possessive, protective heroes. How can I dislike a relationship with two characters when the male just wants to protect her with everything he has and when heroine accepts him the way he is instead of trying to change him?
I was hesitant to read this again because I only read two books way back then and there's so many bad rating but I ended up really enjoying the first book. I think I could've rated it even higher but it didn't give me all the feels.

What to say about this book, it was a tantalizing read. Most of the time I was angry with the heroine and was upset that she would allow the love of her life to refer to her as his woman or simply woman. I mean come on. I did like the story though, it was different and gave it a seductive, dark edge. I might be tempted to read some of the sequels just to see if they find the box and if they turn out to die when the demons are stripped or if they will live on in blissful love. Also, I am curious to see what type of person each character ends up with.

This was a real page turner, for sure. I couldn't put it down! My only complaint was the hideously predictable (slightly smutty) ending, but hey, thats why we read romance books right? Loved it.
ive been lowkey stressed out sm like it's keeping me distracted from reading bc it's constantly on my mind but anyways i finished a shirtless guy book yup bc all the books ive started were so ugh yk and i knew i liked reading books by this author so i'm just binging this 15 book series lol. anyways it wasn't like her other books i read recently it was more plot focused and not as witty and shit which i was kinda sad about but i liked the story it was good the plot twist was obvy tho but the characters are really enjoyable and i'm invested in them now to finish this series. it gave off like 2010 book vibes LMAO idk how to describe it but it was good enough that i finished it in my book slump. but i did cry at the ending of it like i knew it was gonna end happy but something happened before and i cried like a lil bitch but i'm excited for the second book bc the character for it seems funnier so it's probably gonna be more like her recent books hopefully, rating a 8/10 standard fantasy kind of wattpad vibe book. but i was listening to first love / late spring on repeat to this book be i was feeling depressed so now it's associated w this book now lol
** spoilers at the bottom!!** Holy Hell! What an amazing story! Perfect blend of mystery and spice. I really enjoy the unique concept involving Pandora and her Box. I read Reyes story randomly as a teen and have always wanted to read them from start to finish. Now that I’m an adult- I have the capability of having a home library!! So, luckily… I BOUGHT THEM ALL! Which is GOOD- because I DEVOURED this one! Only reason it took 6 days was because I had VERY little time to read each day. I’ve been sacrificing sleep to read! Onto the next one, The Darkest Kiss. **SPOILERS BELOW!**
Y’all… pages 360-364 had me BAWLING while he was begging!! When he was convincing her she’d be fine, they’d patch her up.. as he lay, tied to a bed and watched her be stabbed 6x with a sword.. all while he begged… ugh, it got me

4 stars.
This is the second novel by GS that I've read and I'm getting used to her style of writing. It's still not my favorite but it definitely is less bothersome for me.
The Darkest Night is a great introduction into this world, we get to meet a lot of the future characters & couples.
Maddox and Ashlyn were wonderful together. Maddox has a/the demon of Violence inside and he craves violent acts. I was a little nervous at how that would come out in his relationship with Ashlyn but I was pleasantly surprised and happy that the Violence spirit/demon was used in protection of Ashlyn.
Ashlyn Darrow is a paranormal investigation person and she has abilities, being able to hear conversations that have long since happened, and she helps this investigation team find supernatural beings. At first I was a little annoyed with Ashlyn for the simple reason that she went out in the forest in search of the temple where the Lords are living in hopes of getting her gift under control but she goes unprepared for the conditions of that forest. Her clothes aren't warm enough, she doesn't have food or water, she doesn't have a shelter, she's just being an idiot in the beginning. Thankfully she does get better, she proves to me that she can handle Maddox and his demon, I really liked that she was equally as protective of Maddox as he was of her. I loved when Ashlyn
This was a good opening novel to the series and I look forward to reading more of this series.

snuck into Maddox room after his midnight scheduled death and just held his hand telling him that she'd be there and she wouldn't leave. That was an amazingly sweet moment. This was a good opening novel to the series and I look forward to reading more of this series.
I really enjoyed this - my friend recommended the series to me after hearing that I was a Sherrilyn Kenyon fan. There are definitely similarities in the series, but both are very good on their own merits. They definitely write some damn hot stories with great characters and interesting plots. I'm so glad I was pointed me in the direction of this author, and I'll definitely be reading more.
