This book may have suffered from First Book Syndrome. It seemed to kinda drag in the beginning and I didn't find myself getting into it until about 2/3rds of the way through. I am intrigued though and will definitely move onto the next books!
This is the first romance I've read since I was a teenager, and my, how things have changed. I used to like Gothic romances, which is pretty much this, and the last romance I read was Wuthering Heights, falling in love with Heathcliff for so many years that I almost named my dog after him. I almost forgot about Heathcliff the cat.
Anyway, reading this romance, I could see the formula that I've seen in a lot of write-your-own-novels - Ratchet up the conflict. Keep the conflict going higher and higher, and the constant misunderstandings the denial, the "No, I won't. No, I won't, but we both want to' teasing throughout until the culmination (ahem) in chapter 18.
Meanwhile plot has enough holes to drive a freight train through; Ashlyn's a mutant, ok. Maddox is immortal, ok. He's cursed, ok, too. But then Deus ex Machina at the end? So disappointing.
I suppose that's what's supposed to happen with a love story: all is happy in the end. Need to read more to get the feel of the genre before I make further decisions.
Next on deck, J.R. Ward.

It wasn't bad but wasn't great. I may pick up others in the series, but I'm not sure yet.
Overall, 3 stars

i wished this had been executed better because this had a lot of promising ideas but overall it just fell so so short.
as a romance i felt there was no great set up for the relationship so it inevitably felt super insta-lovey and weak. on the paranormal/magic sense, it was set up fine but one of the main mysteries of the book (revolving around our female MC) was never really answered?
and of course this suffered from the classic misogyny and general hetero (slightly homophobic) writing that a lot of paranormal books have but it all just felt so glaring in this book.
i will say i am interested in a few of the other characters who were introduced in this book though so i might read a few of the other ones ABSDJADK

A great story, quite similar to BDB (with demons rather than vampires!), but I enjoyed it. Strong characters from different worlds usually make a good story, and the rest of the series will be enjoyable if they are as good as this one!
Really enjoyed reading this book again! I'd forgotten a lot, but I knew that it was a really great book! Enjoyed reading it again, can't wait to reread more!

Yeah, this book was really awesome and enjoyable! Way easier ending then the first book! Need to read more!

I love Ashlyn and Maddox's story, it kicks off such a great series that I love, and I can't wait to reread the rest of the series!
*Second Read May 15th, 2013*
I love this book! It's utterly good, and it introduces a whole lot of characters who you have to care about, and stories that are so good, and yeah, I love it! Must reread more of the series!
*First Read September-December 2008, it was during a band trip, so sometime in this time period*
Great intro to the LOTU series! Loved it!
