A fascinating historical account of the golden age of piracy. I’m mostly familiar with the more fantastical fictional accounts of pirates, so it was interesting to learn about real pirate captains like Blackbeard, Charles Vane, Stede Bonnet, Calico Jack, and Anne Bonny. The book also does an excellent job of explaining the political climate in the time of piracy and the reasons that so many of the young men of this time period turned to piracy. I don’t read much nonfiction, and I was worried I would get bored, but it kept my attention throughout the book. I’d definitely recommend it!

Once again, Our Flag Means Death made me do it. Not only was this informative, it was highly entertaining! There was nothing dry about the writing, and even with this being nonfiction, Woodard managed to achieve a sort of cinematic quality. There's only so much that can be said about Blackbeard, Vane, Bellamy, and the lot without venturing into fiction, and the author balanced that line nicely. If anything, I did find the capturing ships/harassing crew and passengers song and dance to be repetitive. But learning exactly what scurvy can do to the body? The fact that the lives focused on here were as dramatic as a soap opera? Delicious.

A very informative book. Gives good detail on not just it's 4 main subjects, but the context around them and their contemporaries. Would almost have liked it to be longer, but then we might have run into pacing issues.
I'm not a big nonfiction reader, but this read very well.

The author uses this biographical style which works very well for the setting. Very well put together, and although it feels like there’s almost a sympathetic bias it still reads very much like history should. Very good.

Very detailed. At times a little dry, but ultimately an enjoyable read.
