*Martha's life would make an incredible miniseries*
Interesting: How the Dodd's ended up going in the first place, Martha's fascination with the boys of the Third Reich, etc.
Appalling: The Dodd's come across as anti-sematic; for example, in a letter "We (my family) sort of don't like Jews anyway.", Hitler and his cronies, etc.
Unanswered: What happened to the Jewish family the Dodd's rented the mansion from?

Graphic: Police brutality, Antisemitism, Murder
Minor: Homophobia, Misogyny
I admit, I put this down a lot, and so maybe it was my fault but I found this tedious.
I like Erik Larson’s nonfiction accounts, and I like the journalistic voice on historical events instead of an academic voice. The first half of this book just makes you so confused as to Dodd and Martha’s views and actions. But then the second half they finally learn and do slightly better. With the plethora of works around world war 2, to still find something that I can learn something from is quite good. It was a chilling read.
Ima be honest with you, I really don’t know why we spent so much time talking about Martha and her sexcapades. The point of the book is how no one wanted to address what Hitler was doing from any side, but it could have been dropped in half the page count to convey that without Martha’s fascination with every cute bad boy who walks in front of her.
Far too much time was spent on Martha. Which is a shame because her story is also interesting, but her parts really slowed down the narrative.
