This prequel offers a look into life as Death-Cast initially launches their brand new service: predicting who will die today. Can they really be accurate about something as serious as death? Two acquaintances are about to find out, when one of them gets the first phone call… and becomes the first official Decker.

Val and Orion had me kicking my legs and giggling with glee like a middle school girl. Their connection was so pure and sweet. But, given the title, I knew it would end up being bittersweet.

”It’s heartbreaking how much it costs to be alive when you’re always dying.”

I enjoyed how the characters and storylines intertwined throughout the novel. And the cameos from TBDATE were such a great touch!

There were quite a few similarities to the first book, but I think this offered a good bit of its own story. It was interesting to see more background on Death-Cast itself - here’s to hoping we get clued into the ‘big secret’ in the next one.

As expected, Adam did not let me get out of this without crying. It’s a tear-stained ending, but one still shrouded in hope.

”Even on your way out, there’s still time to let people in.”

Just like the last book, I was hoping they would live at the end. Adam certainly keeps the promise he makes in the book title.

For me personally, this was a four star read. It’s just the way I connect with these 2 books and how they both ripped out my heart and soul. And I know it was very the same as They Both Die At The End, which is one of my favorites by the way, it just didn’t bother me that much. We got to know a bit more about Death-Cast but not shockingly much. Some chapters about certain characters weren’t really doing it for me. The teasers about Rufus and Matteo’s story were so weird but interestingly. The ending of the book was wel thought of and now I need some time to recover…

4.7* very close 5 star ngl. Very good writing just like the first book. Both boys were so cute and insightful, cringe sometimes but great. I did cry at the end. Even when you know the ending it doesn’t make any easier.

Don’t be scared to live your life.

Spoilers for TBDATE as well!!

This book seriously suffers from trying to recreate the magic of the first one to the point where it almost becomes a carbon copy.

Two gay boys fall in love in New York City with (at least) one doomed to die by the end of the day so they embark on a journey to document themselves living life to the fullest. Except this time, there’s 9/11 trauma. Seriously, we’ve seen this and we’ve done this. We don’t even learn much about Death-Cast, and at this point it feels like the reason we get chapters from Joaquin’s point of view is either for a third book centered around him or maybe some sort of fictitious memoir by him.

This book also suffers from overtly referencing the first one too much. The foreshadowing even gets ridiculously overdone to the point where Silvera references a young Rufus almost getting hit by a car one time and, well, we all know how that one turns out. Delma wants to make an app that ties into Death-Cast somehow…hmm…I wonder if we might’ve seen that before?

Finally, the overcrowding of characters also made this book a giant pain in the ass at times. We really didn’t need chapters from young Mateo and Rufus’ point of view. We get it. You wrote another book in this universe, and they’re in it. We didn’t need a chapter from the landlord’s kid’s point of view either. There were so many side plots that it was hard to keep track of what the hell was going on at times.

Overall, it was a cute premise but either book would have been fine. Not both. There’s just not much to gain from whichever one you read second.

Opnieuw, hoe is zoiets ooit legaal gemaakt?

3 sterren (ring ring)
