Anne is all but gone from the Green Gables books (which haven't taken place in Avonlea for quite some time). She has fully disappeared in the role of mother. This Rilla book is also very different in tone because it chronicles all of WWI. It isn't the joyous, beautiful type of book anymore that provides scope for the imagination. It's packed with pro-war, patriotic nonsense throughout.

One of my favourite "Anne" books. This novel is often overlooked, but provides some fantastic details about life on the homefront during World War I.

Probably the hardest book in the series to read.

Recommend!

This is a simply lovely book that gives some sense of the lives of those who stayed at home during WW1 as well as continuing the story of Anne and Gilbert's family. It blends comic moments with more serious events in true LMM fashion, and contains one of the best literary dogs I have yet met - little Dog Monday. A good read, even if you have been flagging a bit in Anne's chronicles with the later books.

A beloved classic, read aloud to my girls for the first time in 2020.

Pop Sugar Reading Challenge-the shortest book on your tbr list.

After Green Gables this was my favorite of the series. It was so heart-wrenching.

military propaganda is one hell of a drug, but this is one of the best books in the series and a great read.
