Not my favorite of Mary's books. It wasn't bad just not as great as some of her past works. I have read every book of hers since the beginning and sadly it seems like they're just becoming cookie cutter.
I liked the hero and the other characters were enjoyable. Eventually I'll read the rest of the series just to see what happened to them all.

This was embarrassingly bad for a romance book. There was literally not an ounce of tension or romance between Trace and Deb. The historical parts of the book were fanciful, made up, or absorbed from reading other books. The characters were dull and did I mention that the romance was pathetic?

I had trouble getting into this book. I don't think it was anything overly terrible, it just wasn't really my style. It was a Western but there were things about it that didn't feel western, and felt more modern. There were moments that didn't feel well developed.
For example, I have no problem with the wedding night fading to black, but it was weird to me that both Deb and Trace were nervous about the wedding night but then didn't even discuss it either before the fade to black or after. It was like "why is this even here?"

I just didn't feel like the characters were all that well developed and the story itself was fine, but nothing to write home about.

Deborah Harkness, her sister, and two children they were watching escape an attack on their wagon train, but they are left stranded. When a stranger rescues them, they cannot get out of the Sierra Mountains before winter sets in. During the long winter, the stranger intrigues Deborah.

Trace Riley lived a hard life. Left on his own in the wilderness as a teenager, he knows the mountains better than anyone. He takes on the mantle of protecting travelers despite the risk to himself. When two women and children need his help, he rises to the occasion and quickly develops feelings for one woman.

As their lives are threatened, Trace protects them and seeks justice.

What I liked about this book:
- I listened to the audio version of the book and really enjoyed the narrator. She made the story come to life.
- The romance that buds between the main characters is sweet and kept my interest.
- The setting and Trace's back story enhanced the overall story line.
- Like many of Connealy's books, she delivers the suspense that kept me guessing.

Time Period: 1870s
Location: Sierra Mountains (Nevada)
Romance: Very clean. Light kissing.

Enjoyable read

I enjoyed the story. There were a couple of plot holes but still worth the read. I liked seeing Deb’s growth.

I love a book where the hero has a dog (or in this case a wolf??).

Mary Connealy's book are written in a similar style; at least the ones I've read. This book is no different. They take place in near isolation with just a few settlements around. The women are tough. The men are honest - except for the "bad guys."

In this book, Trace is on his way home from his first cattle drive. On his way is discovers a two women and two children that survived the massacre of their wagon train. Trace soon realizes that this is the handiwork of the same individual's who killed Trace's father and the others on the wagon train.

Trace brings the women, sisters Deb and Gwen, and children back to his ranch. Attraction soon grows between Deb and Trace. But danger lurks as the outlaws soon realize that there were survivors and an eyewitness.

I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series
