Would I recommend it? Yes...?
So overall, good, new, unique idea. I love witchy stories but something was missing for me at least. The story kept me intrigued and I think people who enjoy fantasy novels will like this I love her book The Hazelwood but I feel some important details were lacking. Why didn't Dana just erase Ivy and Billy's knowledge of magic and erase her friendship with him? How come Billy didn't bring this up sooner at school instead of Dana turning him away at the home? Why did Ivy's parents allow her to date and hang out with a teen who drives and drinks and why was that not reported to the police and his parents??? With Marion, how did she get into magic? What made her turned to dark magic so quickly? How could Sharon a more experienced and older witch not know what Marion was doing?! With Dana and Fi they just so happened to be interested and had the affinity for magic? That being so they didn't really give many details. The author was like hey here's 3 girls they do magic and so.ethjng bad happens. Ummm I needed more details. Then later on Ivy finds out about Marion. I know she's young and worries for Marrion but SHE IS EVIL! if Dana took the time to explain that this would be a very different story. I think the story needed a bit more info about how the magic came about with all 3 girls, Marion's intentions not blind sighting us, and Ivy and Billy's change in friendship. Decent book, I'd recommend but with a heads up it was a little of a slow read.

I love to read about the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters, and the ways in which intergenerational trauma plays a part in how they relate to one another. I also love witches, so this tale of maternal bonds gone sour and magic gone awry made my heart sing. Albert's signature elegant prose also made my heart sing, although the one significant quibble I had with this book is that sometimes it goes too far—the writing itself is enchanting, but sometimes strays into the realm of purple prose and weighs down the plot in a way that made it hard to enjoy. But a good 80% of the time it was lovely and captivating and I'm really excited that Albert's first book (I believe?) outside of the Hazel Wood universe was just as much of a delight as I remember that duology being.

I’m making a prediction that any contemporary YA fantasy lover (and I stress the YA) is going to fall head over heals for this book. This book was a lot of fun. Imagine the witches from the Craft, now imagine them grown up and keeping what happened to them a secret from their now child for that child’s… safety? For their own safety? From guilt? We don’t know. At least you won’t until you read it. All I can tell you is She knows something isn’t right, that something is being kept from her and that there are triggers in her memory that shouldn’t be there.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Flatiron Books publishing for letting me read this early for an exchange for an honest review!
This story is told in a timeline that jumps around allowing the secrets and truths slowly unfold for you. Because of this, the last half of the book was filled with excitement… but the first half can leave you a little confused on where this story is taking you. I’m glad I stuck with it though.
