I did not love these characters and couldn't get into the main character.  She spends most of the book cowering or going along with everything.  The end of the book is when things turn around.  I kept reading to see what would happen, and I got invested enough that I'll read the next book.

A little cheesy and predictable. Slow first half, great final third. Really well done on the world building but dragged a bit to get there.

The only reason I didn't give this amazing book 5 stars is because it had several scenes of detailed animal death. Most of them were the same scene over & over. Unnecessary.
