I can't figure out if I like this book or not. Dewey is a great cat, I actually have an orange Main Coon (Max, ironically enough) who looks JUST like him (and he's the best cat ever), but there's something about the book that I didn't care for. It's too tragic. I get that it's about someone's life, and that life apparently was an extremely hard one, not that everyone doesn't have their trials and tribulations, but to me there is too much. I get that at the end the cat's going to die, that goes without saying, but this woman's life was awful and depressing, and the book made me feel awful and depressed. That's probably too harsh, these things actually happened to her, and I sound heartless saying it was too much for me. She lived through it, I'm just reading about it...but I wish there'd been a little warning as to the degree of the tragedies. I'm going to stop sounding selfish now and leave you saying it was a book that took an extreme amount of gumption to write, I'm glad that she got to tell her story, but this story isn't for everyone.

A work colleague loaned me this to read (we work in a library...the book's by a librarian, and about a library cat. SO fitting!), and I finished it on Sunday. I think all cats are special. I've got a particular appreciation for the totally bitchy ones who hate everyone, but maybe that's just me. hahaha. Anyway, this kitty, named Dewey Readmore Books by the staff at the library, was certainly not bitchy. He had his moments of fussiness and the like, but he sounds like he was such an amazing cat. He was certainly an excellent ambassador for the library, as was mentioned a few times in the book.

Reading about his death took me back to losing my own pets (cats, too), and I could totally relate to the sadness of that. But my cats were special just to me. This cat was special to people all around the world! From humble beginnings (being dumped in a returns chute from a dingy alleyway out back) he rose to some serious celebrity heights for a cat. He also lived a very long life - I believe he died at 18. My cats have mostly lived till 18 or 19, so I could relate to this.

Anyway, it was an easy and quick read, even if I sometimes wanted to skip over some parts, i.e. the long description of the corn and stuff that occurred near the beginning. ;) I did not skip a single word!

I LOVED this book! It's hard NOT to like a book about cats, since I'm such a huge kitty lover, but Dewey's story is truly a heartwarming tale. I always believe that our pets come into our lives at specific times for specific reasons, and it seems Dewey certainly fulfilled his destiny by making so many people happy. This story will make you cry at the end ... but the story is so worth it, you'll be glad you read it.

I really loved this book, and would recommend it to all librarians and cat lovers. (for the record, I consider myself the first but not the latter) It was amazing to me how much the story had to do with our situation today. The parallels between the farm crisis of the late 70's and early 80's and today are quite eerie. The fact that when Dewey the cat was found, the library was in the process of reinventing itself by providing resume services and job preparation information is quite telling. It's a feel good book that librarians and library lovers should read to see how libraries can adapt themselves to whatever situation they find themselves in to serve the needs of the public.

Ugh. I grabbed this book because I love cats....and books. This book was so bad....I expected the book was about a cat in a library.....but the author included random information about herself. Big YAWN. Also a big yawn was the writing. Style was horrible.... Don't bother reading.

cats are so wonderful and this book was so incredibly sweet and heartfelt. not a masterclass in writing necessarily, but an incredibly touching story where the emotions and love truly shine through. i'd heard of dewey the library cat before, but this book explained that he was more than just a cat in a library, but a core aspect of a community that had helped the town and many of its people through dark, tough times. this was such a sweet, heartfelt story filled with so much love.
