saw someone write a bad review for Dewey and felt like i needed to come and set the record straight- this book made me cry (like most books with animals do) and i loved Dewey so much it hurt. 5 stars would inflict the emotional pain on myself again

Okay, this was really cute! I saw that it was about a cat, that lived in the library, named DEWEY! and I just had to check it out and read it. I loved reading about this cat and Spencer, Iowa and the change that came along in part because of Dewey. It makes me want a cat of my own, and a cat for my library as well!

I read this book while taking Dana and Jill down to San Antonio for the Spartan Race. It was a decent book. I didn't know it was true, though. I love how it brought the town together. I need to go visit Spencer, Iowa now.

Ridiculously cute. My daughter warned me I’d cry at the end and she’s right.

In other news I can see how easy it would be to become obsessed with the genre of books that pretend they are about cats but are really talking about the way a good library functions as the heart of a town.

I may not be a cat person, due to being allergic to the little fur balls, but this cat looks so freaking cute on the cover. Also the name? Dewey? Freaking adorable.

Now Dewey's story was a little sad in the beginning. I hate when people give up on their animals. Or even give them up in general. Especially when they are so young and can't defend themselves. These people are monsters in my eyes and I feel like they should never have pets again in their lives. They just don't deserve their unconditional love.

So when Dewey get's stuffed into a returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library... well, tears may have been already falling from my eyes. I swear on my dogs lives it was allergies.. or something. Once he was found by Vicki, the library director, I started to get hope that this little guy was going to be alright in the end.

Luckily he wormed his way into their hearts and mine as well. After meeting him, this book doesn't keep the focus on Dewey throughout the entire book - which seemed okay to me but kind of weird at the same time. We got to learn about the small town and the crisis it went through. As well as the author's life - which honestly made me feel so bad for her.

I feel like this book might have been a bit better if I got more cat than anything else but I'm still glad I dove into it. The audiobook was pretty easy to listen to and the book flew by for me. In the end, if I could change one thing I probably would have gotten rid of the little bits of running a library.. but that's just me.

On a freezing cold night in rural Iowa, someone shoved a tiny kitten into the public library's outdoor book drop. The librarians found the kitten the next morning, huddled in the corner and clinging to life. He was dirty and bedraggled, but immediately offered hugs and purrs to the librarians, his rescuers. He was named Dewey Readmore Books and he became the library's cat - cared for by the head librarian (the author), but winning the hearts of every member of the community. This memoir is mainly about Dewey, his funny personality, how he befriended every patron of the library, and how he even became world famous. But the author also invites you into her life and her community, facing hardships with courage and endlessly striving to make this small town a better place. I looked forward to reading this every day and gosh darn it if it didn't make me sob at the end!

Somewhat gushy in parts, but a lovely and touching memoir about a library in a small town, the town's folk and the cat who changed their lives forever.
Always reserve a place in your heart for animals. They are amazing.
