I love cats. I love libraries. I loved this book. Vicki Myron interweaves the history of her town and her library with the story of Dewey, the awesome library cat. The book was a touch too autobiographical for my tastes, going into personal illness and family relations. However, I was fascinated by the picture of a small-town library that becomes a world-famous tourist location due to its cat. There are plenty of cute photographs of Dewey, too. This book was a great way to honor a cute little guy who was a friend to so many.

This was a really darling book. Heartwarming.
inspiring lighthearted medium-paced

I listened to the audio-book and only when it was finished did I realize that it was abridged. UGH. I should have read the fine print. Abridgment is a crime against nature.

So I had to buy the book and "reread" it to see what I missed. The audio-book includes all the cat stories of course, but it omits the stories that make this not-just-a-book-about-a-cat. Stories about Myron's life outside the library, stories about life in small-town Iowa... those are watered down or altogether missing from the audio-book.

And the audio-book version suffers for it.

I am admittedly a "cat-person," but I even rolled my eyes a time or two, reading the lofty characterizations attributed to this cat. But the point is made well. It takes a special creature to inspire not only a person or a community, but people across the world.

Dewey sounds like an amazing furry friend to have. This book was about more than just the cat, though: there were descriptive chapters of life in small-town northwestern Iowa, complete with bits of historical trivia about the recession of the 80's and descriptions of Dewey's special relationships with many of the town regulars who needed his friendship the most. The author also wove in information about her own life and the many battles she faced. Everything tied together beautifully. I wish we could have a Dewey at my library.

There was something wrong. I wanted a story of Dewey, but I found Vicki Myron's. If the book was entirely about that orange kitten, I'd gave it 4.5 ☆
Love you, Dewey! Hope you are in a better place now♡
emotional fast-paced

A sweet story that will appeal to lovers of cats, small towns and libraries.

More about the author than the cat

Cute book. It was more of a memoir of a retired librarian's experiences living in small-town Iowa than the story of a cat. The cat served more as a way to connect the memories.
