The ending redeemed the book. Throughout the book the pacing and the way the world was described was doing my head in. It was a little slow paced and I found there was an over explanation. It felt very tell not show.

I enjoyed it! Definitely worth reading if you learned of it through TikTok. I was in love with the premise and the cover art (twist out on fleek!) It made me smile and I love the humorous and carefree nature of the black female MC. The fact that her client/Grim Reaper is an Asian hunk also deserves bonus points.

The book was fun - the characters even the myster(ies) which I predicted several chapters early. I think the book would’ve been even better if the twists weren’t easily predictable but the journey is where it’s at I guess, am I right?

Halfway through it turned into the D*cking Down of Ms Joyce Ann Parker… Did not expect this erotic turn so quick but I was giggling throughout and now I can’t wait for the sequel and what lies

Okay first of all, this book is okay. The representation is on point and I think that’s my favorite thing about the book.

With that said, I have a lot more problems with it than I should. Let’s start out with the general idea. Being the Grim Reaper’s lawyer. It’s a good idea but the way it was executed just took all the magic away. I didn’t enjoy the way Eden was set up or the way Reapers were set up. This is mostly just a Me problem so if you enjoyed it, good for you. I just felt like there’s so much we could’ve learned about Eden but the most we learned is the Departments and the fact they have different colors lmao.

Second, the main character! Love her, I really do, she’s the one with the most personality but dear god, the writer mentions her fixing her hair every 2 seconds. I understand that because she’s a POC that her hair is much more of an importance in her life but there’s no reason for you to mention it every chapter. I feel like we put on a fashion show for this character every second we get instead of focusing on idk.. literally everything else. I felt like I was reading a Wattpad story that I wrote in the 6th grade with the whole “She sauntered out of the shower and threw her hair in a bun”. If it’s your cup of tea, great! But not me :(

Third problem, the love story. We dramatically go from Aiden hating the shit out of Joy to absolutely head over heels. This seemed like it was supposed to be a slow burn but it really wasn’t. They quickly move from hating to love overnight. I hate that. The sex was hot asf though so I won’t completely complain.

Next problem, Aiden Kim. I was so ecstatic to have an Asian character  representation but sadly his character was just not good. He was shallow and not because he was a bad character but because the Author didn’t give him any personality or fleshed out backstory. He was so flat besides his stubbornness. Was he hot? Yes, but without a personality I feel like i’m reading about a brick wall. We have very minimal backstory too which makes it worse.

The plot twist was expected and I felt the overarching villain wasn’t great. Honestly, the more I write this review the more I realize how many beginner Author mistakes are here. I believe it’s her first time writing and publishing a book so i’m cutting her some slack but MISS GIRL!! YOU GOTTA PUT SOME GOOD PLOT IN THERE.

The plot felt very slow and they didn’t even do anything. If I was in the afterlife, you’d think i’d go on so many crazy adventures but apparently in this fictional world I wouldn’t. Then at the end, every plot point is shoved in. It’s sad because this book could’ve been great.

In conclusion: Slow plot and predictable plot, shallow characters, good idea but not executed well, overall boring asf. Hot sex scenes though!!

I was excited about this book because it seemed to have promise. It fell flat almost immediately.

Thoughts :
- interesting concept of the afterlife but it desperately needed more fleshing out
- the writing style was so…formal. The repeated use of “I am” instead of “I’m” made the dialogue incredibly stilted
- Joyce had zero endearing qualities and was constantly outshone by a side character
- Joyce and Aiden’s dynamic felt so disjointed. Their transition from “enemies” to more wasn’t smooth. It felt so random when he started calling her ‘baby’. One scene they couldn’t get along and the next minute they were close. It didn’t feel like they had any chemistry whatsoever
- the scene with Aiden after Joyce got back from reaping souls with Joey didn’t seem consensual in the slightest. That’s what made me dnf.

I won’t be reading anything else from this author.

I went into this book hoping for a quick read to break up my thriller books. Unfortunately, this didn’t work for me. Another reviewer referred to this book as ‘disjointed’ and honestly, I think that’s the best way to describe it. Nothing feels quite connected, the plot has random things that come out of nowhere without much, if any, foreshadowing. The plot armor here is thick. Everything seems to go wrong and then very conveniently, everything seems to work itself out without a hitch. Joyce seems to get out of any issue with ease. I think there’s only so many coincidences you can have in a book before it becomes boring to read. This book would probably have been a 2 star read for me but once I read the sex scene after Joyce collects souls with Joey, it was immediately a 0 for me. This was kinda repulsive to read. I don’t care if Joyce eventually was into it, she tried to leave the room and he pinned her. Why are we romanticizing this? I understand the author wanted to portray Aiden as an assertive partner but this was not it. There is a million, actually consensual ways this could’ve been written. I have genuinely never been effected by things like this in books but this scene made my stomach drop. It really requires some kind of warning. I understand some people enjoy consensual non-consent but there was no consent actually leading up to the sexual acts in this scene, Joyce tries to leave *and* told him no initially, if I remember correctly. Also Aiden acts as if sex is transactional, that she owes him it for upsetting him. And the fact that Joyce at the end of this tells him that she feels the safest she ever has because of him, this feels like a gross romanticization of SA to me personally. It’s safe to say that I will not be reading the next book in this series.

I really enjoyed this. There was a few points that annoyed me but they resolved pretty quick.

There was so much more to this than I was expecting. I went in thinking it would just be a cute little romance between a lawyer and the grim reaper but i was so wrong. I mean it’s that too but there is really in depth world building and a complicated but really good plot. It’s not predictable, there is a couple things that are but the overall thing is not.

The ending shocked me and I need the next book now, also how could you do that to me???

I'm in a few different book clubs, both on Discord and Geneva, and a lot of them pick different books to read each month, and I've always wanted to participate in them, but I've been sucking at actually following through lately, so I've decided in February that my main reading goal is to actually read some of the picks! The Sexy Book Club over on Geneva picked The Grim Reaper's Lawyer as their month's main read. I honestly could not wait to pick it up because it looked and sounded amazing! This book just came out this past December, and I haven't seen anyone talk about it yet, and it definitely needs more love because it was AMAZING! It had a unique concept because we learned about this grim reaper company thing, and I was OBSESSED with it! It was so much fun seeing how it all worked like a company and all of the different levels within it. I'm obsessed when a book has a really good world-building, and I tend to get obsessed with the world, and that's what happened in this book. There is a romance in it, but I think it kind of takes a back burner. First, it does take forever to really happen between Aiden and Joyce, and I kind of liked the slow burn for this story because we got to learn about this world and got to see the story play out. Then we saw all of the prep work for the trial and the actual trial happen, plus the crazy verdict, and I was just so obsessed with this book and how it was written. There were just so many concepts that kept going on that I didn't mind not seeing the romance happen right away. There were some really steamy moments once they finally got together. But I just loved all of the twists and turns that happened in this book, and I really cannot wait until the next book comes out. It is supposed to come out sometime this year, and I cannot wait!
