A timeless treat if there ever was one, Stevenson single-handedly -for better or worse- associated talking parrots, wooden legs, and pieces of parchment where X marks the spot with no good, rum swilling, shanty singing, mutinous buccaneers.
A minor quibble, when Jim grabbed a bit of cheese whilst sneaking aboard the Hispaniola during his deadly encounter with an inebriated and treacherous Mr. Hands, I always assumed that he would gift the cheese to Benjamin Gunn, who spent many a night dreaming of toasted cheese. Oh well.
I wished that the book was longer so that I could spend more time with good ol' bad Long John Silver and young Jim Hawkins lower the sails, trundle barrows, and feel the spray of the sea. But alas, all good things must come to a close, and this includes sailing the high seas with a heading for treasure...

A classic, beautifully structured and paced story written when young adult writers didn't think their readers were stupid. So much to recommend it--listening to the story, which I've known since my father read it to us numerous times as kids, the miles flew by. Highly, highly recommended. Why has no one given this a serious, historically appropriate rendering like Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle's Pride and Prejudice? It could be fantastic!
I enjoyed reading a story I already knew so well. There was something comfortingly familiar about plot that I found it effortless to drift off and get distracted. I did enjoy the book but it didn’t necessarily hold my interest.
I really enjoyed sections, and then would completely lose track of what was going on (language, sea lingo, my concentration?)
We read this chapter by chapter with my son who is almost 5 - he loved it! And what fun to share a classic story with him!

This was a fun, plot-driven read with distinct and colorful characters. A cast more diverse in race and gender would've made it more enjoyable, though.
