Sophie Katz is elated at the news of her friend, Mary Ann, being engaged. But the pre-wedding excitement is put on the back burner when her other friend, Dena, is shot in the back- and may never walk again. Sophie Katz is an impulsive, half Jewish half black mystery writer who surrounds herself with an inner circle of wild and crazy humanity. There’s her independent, sexy and secretive quasi-boyfriend, a P.I. named Anatoly; her best friend Dena, the owner of a local sex shop catering to toys for naughty girls and boys, her sister Leah , a wannabe wedding planner, and Mary Ann the bride-to-be whose upcoming wedding is the catalyst for murder, mayhem and some crazy antics.

The relationship between Sophie and Anatoly fell flat in this book. Sophie also seemed to think her theories had to be right no matter how flawed they where. I thought this one was ok not as good as other books in the series. It still did have some of the humor I do like.

It was just an okay read to me. I liked most of the characters and thought they were (mostly) well developed. Some made me roll my eyes at their stupidity but no spoilers here. I didn't know it was a series and this is the first book I've read of it but I won't be continuing. I didn't like the way Sophie repeatedly treated her boyfriend and her stupidity/stubbornness. I also don't like when authors put their political biases repeatedly into fiction.

This was not my favorite Sophie Katz book. The other 4 books I tore through and this one I struggled to finish. There seemed to be something lacking in this book compared to the others. Maybe I was expecting a little more of Sophie's escapades and this just didn't seem to have it.

It was alright. A pretty good mystery. Probably would've liked it more if I had started at the beginning of the series. Some of the characters were kooky, annoying or just plain nutty. Sophie needs to chill out if her relationship is gonna work. It had a great cliffhanger!

I forgot how much I enjoy this series, especially as a palette cleanser. Mary Ann is still annoying AF, though.

Sophie is an established author who fancies herself a bit of a detective. I’m jumping in 5 books into the series, but any backstory that was relevant is explained. The characters here are over-the-top in one way or another, from the Disney loving Mary-Ann and Monty to the polyamorous Dena and Jason to the perpetually-stoned Amelia to the secretive Russian Anatoly. And Sophie is the glue that holds all of them together. As you would expect from the cover, the tone to this mystery is relatively light. At least, as light as it can be when someone has been shot and possibly paralyzed. My one complaint is that Sophie doesn’t really do any detecting here… things just sort of happen to her, and she reacts. The actions she takes are generally a result of someone else’s contribution or intervention. And at one point it looked like there was going to be a twist, but then it just evaporated. I think I might have preferred that to the actual ending, which was not entirely unexpected. All in all, this wasn’t a bad read, but I probably won’t rush out to pick up the earlier books in the series.

Oh, how I missed Sophie Katz and her ridiculous antics.

Sophie is over the top, melodramatic, and absolutely ridiculous. But that's what I like about these books. They're so over-the-top that I can lose myself in the antics, and forget about how much real life sucks (especially right now).

While the whole mystery this time around was incredibly predictable, getting to the bottom of it was a wild ride.

There were some antics I could have gone without, but then I wouldn't have a genuine Sophie Katz mystery on my hands.

And it also wouldn't be a genuine Sophie Katz mystery without some tension between Sophie and Anatoly. Sophie is sick of him hiding huge chunks of his life from her, and, well, I really can't blame her for that.

But boy howdy, I was not expecting a secret quite as huge as the cliffhanger the epilogue left us with. I really should have seen something like it coming, but I really didn't. And now I have a whole new Sophie Katz mystery to look forward to, and the fallout of the cliffhanger revelation.
