I don’t usually love flashbacks but I did enjoy it in this one! It was a little slow and mostly predictable but an enjoyable pastime regardless.

This one was…weird. So much tension built up, so little payoff. The writing is incredibly cringy at times (horny octopuses?! Lick him like a lollipop??). The premise could have been interesting had it not been for 10 years of built-up tension…all because of a handful of days spent between strangers with a very shaky and unrealistic “love” story. The more I read and realized “THAT weekend” was just a time something kind of almost happened (that left them thinking about each other the next decade??), the less interested I became. Not to mention, Chani doesn’t seem like a very professional or good writer. Questionable professional boundary-crossing aside, she has no food questions prepared for her interview, doesn’t have great writing and overall is just boring and flat as a character. This seriously read like corny fanfiction teenage girls write about their celebrity crush.

When I say I used an entire pack of page flags to annotate the love throughout this book I mean it. Sussman’s writing reminds me of a mix between Emily Henry and Taylor Jenkins Reid but stands on its own. If you’re looking for a slow burn missed connections kind of love story this is it.

I stand to hate books with flashbacks. I REALLY stand to hate second chance romances. I want my instant love and gratification and I want it now dammit.

However, I also stand corrected. While the incessant articles in-between storyline were annoying, and while she broke up so much of a couple of nights into so much exposition it came out a little fuzzy. I still really loved this story.

I think there were some unanswered things, like her relationship with her ex and the ending of that that should have been more addressed. I think her apartment and friend back in LA needed to play more of a part. I think his family and his niece didnt have any kind of storyline, when it could have been more. There were definitely things that could have been fixed.

At its core though, its an addictive story. Its something I couldnt put down, and gave me a lot to yearn for. I wasnt shocked by the ending but i was happy with it. This left me feeling warm.

I loved this! This is what I want from a romance. There wasn’t a single cringey or embarrassing line. I genuinely liked the characters and I thought Gabe Parker was amazing! Definitely not as spicy as most romances, but I couldn’t care less if the dialogue is palatable!

The audiobook is fantastic!

I love love love this book. I loved the fast-paced writing, the chemistry between Chani and Gabe, and the qualms about existentialism. To say I’m obsessed would be an understatement.
